What is the Cooperative Education/Internship Program?

The Co-op/Internship program provides students with practical experience which reinforces the theoretical concepts learned in the classroom. The Co-op/Internship program aids in bridging the gap between student life and the world of work. This program combines students' academic and career interests with work experience in business, industry, government, or service organizations. Key elements of the Co-op/Internship program experience are:

Professional level work assignments in areas related to the student's academic major.
Supervision and evaluation of performance by professionals in a chosen career field.
Completion of learning objectives designed to relate academic studies to the work world.

Why should I participate in a Co-op or Internship?

Cooperative Education/Internship offers many benefits to students.

Provides work experience which is relevant to academic major and career goals.
Helps to define career goals so that more realistic job choices can be made.
Establishes valuable professional contacts and broadens job opportunities after graduation.
May provide income to help with college expenses.
Increases self-confidence and interpersonal skills.
Enhances motivation and classroom participation by relating academics to the work world.
Offers the potential to earn one college credit for every 100 hours worked, to a maximum of six credit hours per semester for undergraduate students. Graduate students can earn one credit hour for each 200 hours worked. Each individual department chair/designee is responsible for determining the suitability of potential Co-ops/Internships. Credit is awarded as open electives. In some instances, the department may approve course substitutions for technical or specified credit for certain work experiences. Any substitutions must be approved prior to the start of the qualifying Co-op/Internship.

Who is eligible?

Undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program who...

Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
Have completed 30 university or college credit hours; if a transfer student, have completed at least 12 credit hours at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in addition to meeting other requirements.
Remain in good academic standing throughout their participation in the Co-op/Internship program.

Graduate students at full graduate status who...

Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Have completed 6 (six) credit hours applicable to his/her degree program, and will have completed 9 (nine) credit hours by the start of the internship.

Sign up online for an EagleHire account in order to register with the Career Services office.
Visit the Career Services Organization on Blackboard for in-depth information, including presentation handouts, important dates and deadlines, Co-op/Internship opportunity listings, the Co-op/Internship advisor directory, and organizations offering special programs for various degree areas (must be logged in to view hyperlink).
Attend a Co-op/Internship seminar and schedule an advising session with a Career Services program manager.
Review Co-op/Internship lists for instructions to apply.
Apply for many Co-op/Internship positions through EagleHire by the posted deadline. Co-op/Internship Lists may also include companies who accept online resumes directly. Lists are available through the Career Services Organization on Blackboard.
Apply to Co-ops/Internship openings you find on your own. Learn more about the Self-Created Co-op/Internship approval process from your Program Manager. Follow the steps on the Co-op/Internship To Do List.
Once you have accepted a Co-op/Internship position, complete a Co-op/Internship contract through the Career Services Office to earn academic credit.
