University 101

 1 Credit Course

Students talking amongst themselves in class UNIV 101 is a course in which first-year students are introduced to the history of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the aerospace/aviation engineering industries, the current state of the industries as well as career options in the industries. Also included in UNIV 101 is information regarding the personal, interpersonal, intellectual, and social skills necessary to succeed in college.These include time management, study skills, goal clarification, health and wellness issues learning styles, campus resources and involvement.

UNIV 101 is taught in groups of 20 - 25 students by faculty members and administrative personnel who have a special interest in first-year students. Instructors are paired with a peer mentor who assists the instructor with classroom instruction and serves as a point of contact for each student in his UNIV 101 section. Instructors and peer mentors are trained by the staff of First Year Programs. Extensive reading and writing assignments and an industry/career research project relevant to the student's first year experience are required parts of this course. This course is taken as part of the student's regular course load and is graded on a letter grade basis.

UNIV 101 provides an introduction to the nature of higher education and a general orientation to the functions and resources of the University. This course also provides a support group for students in a critical transition year by examining problems common to the first year experience.
