Daytona Beach has something for everyone -- the
adventure of a city and the warmth, charm, and friendly atmosphere
of a small town. One of Florida's primary tourist destinations,
Daytona Beach is located on the central east coast of Florida
and is known as the World's Most Famous Beach. The area's many
lakes and rivers along with the ocean offer an endless variety
of recreational activities, such as freshwater and saltwater
fishing, sport fishing tournaments, sailing, surfing, snorkeling,
and swimming.
During the winter, you can always head for one of the nearby
springs, where temperatures remain in the low 70s all year round.
Swimmers and snorkelers can spend their time shoulder-to-shoulder
with the bluegills, the tilapia, and the manatees that swim
up the St. Johns River every winter. The springs, which are
fed with a flow of millions of gallons of water a day, also
offer some of the best inner tubing in the area.
If you like to camp or backpack, you'll enjoy the 362,000-acre
Ocala National Forest and the 836-acre Tomoka State Park. Take
a trail close to the Tomoka River and you'll be in Tarzan country,
where alligators live in the marshlands, and ospreys nest in
the tops of the cypress trees. Along the winding black waters
of the Tomoka are stately live oak trees, with branches 70 feet
long. Timber from these trees was used to build ships in the
19th century.
Winters are mild and summers are warm in Daytona Beach thanks
to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River,
an estuary which flows between the beachside and the mainland.
The area's average temperature year-round is 70.5 degrees. Average
monthly temperatures are 69 in January, 85 in May, 89 in July,
87 in September, and 70 in December.
Water temperatures range from the low 60s in winter and early
spring to high 70s and low 80s from late spring through late
fall.
ARTS/NATURE
Theater-goers and music buffs turn to events sponsored by
such groups as Seaside Music Theater and the biannual Florida
International Festival. For the art enthusiast, scheduled exhibits
are planned throughout the year at the Museum of Arts and Sciences;
Daytona Beach Community College and its Southeast Museum of
Photography; Art League of Daytona Beach, and other area museums
and galleries. For nature lovers, popular destinations include
the Museum of Arts and Science and its Planetarium; the Marine
Science Center in Ponce Inlet; and the Tomoka Basin GeoPark.
GOLF
The area is the home of the LPGA and boasts many fine golf
courses.

HISTORIC SITES
Historical points of interest include the Ponce de Leon
Inlet Lighthouse and Museum, the Casements (winter home of John
D. Rockefeller), the Bulow Plantation Ruins, the venerable Fairchild
Oak, the Halifax Historical Museum, and the Wright Flyer monument
at Embry-Riddle.
OCEAN CENTER
The Ocean Center is a 225,000-square-foot multipurpose facility
which accommodates trade shows, sports events, concerts, meetings,
expositions, and banquets. It is located on the beachside across
from the Adam's Mark hotel and the OceanWalk entertainment and
dining complex.
PARKS AND RECREATION
Take advantage of pristine Florida parks along the coast
and in the Central Florida area. These include Canaveral National
Seashore, DeLeon Springs State Park, Blue Spring State Park,
Hontoon Island State Park, Washington Oaks State Gardens, and
Matanzas Inlet. Canoe in one of several rivers and creeks or
hike along the Florida Trail. A new water park, Adventure Landing,
recently opened next to the Adam's Mark hotel in Daytona Beach.
SPEEDWAY
A variety of racing events are held throughout the year
at the world-famous Daytona International Speedway. Speed weeks
in February climax with the famed Daytona 500 auto race. Bike
Week in March features the Daytona Beach 200 Motorcycle Classic.
The Daytona USA attraction offers a unique inside look at the
racing world.
SPRING BREAK
Embry-Riddle students have a special advantage: they don't
have to travel anywhere to reach the ideal vacation spot! Spring
Break attracts college students from across the nation to the
Daytona Beach area during the months of March and April.
WEEKENDING
Weekending can mean making your way down to the coral reefs
at the Florida Keys or a trip to historic and quaint St. Augustine.
The nearby Orlando area is home to Disney World and its several

and Disney's Animal Kingdom. Orlando also hosts Sea World; Universal
Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure; and several water
parks. The serene Gulf coast beach resorts are just a few hours
west.
