Career Outlook
The main goal of the safety professional is to prevent harm to people, property
and the environment. By applying principles drawn from engineering, physics,
chemistry, biology, education, psychology, health, and management, the safety
professional identifies, evaluates and controls or prevents hazards in the
workplace.
The field of safety science includes everything that goes into the
analysis and prevention of accidents, illnesses, fires, explosions and other
events that can harm people, property and the environment.
Working as a safety professional can be pleasantly challenging, extremely
gratifying and monetarily very rewarding. Few other fields offer the opportunity
to protect people from harmful accidents while getting paid well to do so.
Since the focus of the safety profession is to identify, evaluate and control
hazards, safety professionals work anywhere where humans might be exposed
to hazards.

No matter what a company’s business is (manufacturing, transportation,
chemical, fuels production, teaching and research, construction, regulatory,
service, or insurance), hazards will be present in some or all of its operations.
In addition, its employees will face hazards either at work, getting to
and from work, off work (at home) or during leisure activities.
To be successful in this interdisciplinary field of safety it is important
to have a broad background in science (biology, chemistry and physics)
and mathematics and develop good communication and people skills. Depending
on the level of education and experience a safety professional can expect
to have a long rewarding career, as the employment potential in this field
is very good. Employment opportunities are available in private industry, public
sector and research and education (teaching). The safety science degree
provides an individual with a broad educational experience. This makes an experienced
safety professional well positioned to move to different divisions within
an organization, thereby improving his/her chances of advancement. In addition,
this profession is also very transportable with safety professionals having
little difficulty moving from one organization to the next.
Professionals
in safety may also pursue advanced degrees, including the doctoral degree
or enroll in professional schools like law or business administration.
Salaries in the field range from about $30,000 for entry-level positions
to about $150, 000 for well-qualified people in senior positions.
Many graduates however, have been receiving starting salaries in the $40,000+
range. For example, most recently, an Embry-Riddle safety science graduate
(class of 2004) received a starting salary of $41,000, working for Dow
Corning as a safety specialist.
The average mid-career safety professional
with a bachelor’s or master's degree earns between $60,000-$75,000 annually.
Keep in mind that the field of safety offers individuals a broader
spectrum of careers than many other fields of study. In addition, the safety
professional can take pride and satisfaction in the fact that the profession’s
fundamental objective is to protect people, property and the environment
from harm.
