Daniel A. Cutrer Safety Science Program Coordinator
Master's Degree in Aviation Management/Safety (with distinction), 2002, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Professor Cutrer is a retired U. S. Coast Guard officer with more than 30 years as a fixed-wing aviator and five years of experience in the Department of Homeland Security.

For the past four years, Mr. Cutrer has served as an Adjunct Instructor for Embry-Riddle’s Worldwide Campus, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in aviation safety and aviation maintenance management. He also served as the Center Faculty Chair for the new Embry-Riddle Worldwide Elizabeth City (N.C.) Center he opened in 2005. In the fall of 2006, he joined the faculty at the Daytona Beach campus, where he helped develop the homeland security degree program and assists in teaching aviation safety courses.

Cutrer began his military aviation career as an enlisted aircraft mechanic for the first six years. After Officer Candidate School, he went to Navy Flight Training at Pensacola, Fla., earning his pilot wings in 1981. Subsequent assignments in the Coast Guard included Aircraft Maintenance Officer, Assistant Engineering Officer, Flight Operations Officer, Aviation Safety Officer, Disaster Preparedness Planning Officer, and Executive Officer. His final assignment in 2005 was as the Commanding Officer of U. S. Coast Guard Aviation Technical Training Center, where the service trains all of its aircraft mechanics, technicians, and rescue swimmers.

Clarence Rodrigues Professor  of Safety Science
Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and a master degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University

Dr. Rodrigues is a full professor in the College of Aviation and the program coordinator for the B.S. in Safety Science. He teaches courses in systems safety, engineering hazard control, industrial hygiene, security, and ICS emergency response.

Before joining Embry-Riddle, Dr.Rodrigues was a member of the Safety Sciences faculty at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and was also an OSHA consultant for the State of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining IUP, Dr.Rodrigues was a worldwide engineering manager for the Campbell Soup Co. for seven years.While at Campbell Soup,he also held an adjunct faculty appointment in the University of Pennsylvania’s systems engineering department.

Dr.Rodrigues has consulted for industry and for government,has made several national and international presentations, and has authored or co-authored numerous technical publications, including a textbook titled Commercial Aviation Safety. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and a master degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University.He also holds a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering and a master degree in Environmental Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, India.

Anthony Brickhouse Assistant Professor
M.A.S., Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Prior to becoming a faculty member, Prof. Brickhouse was the Assistant Aviation Safety Program Manager for Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach campus. Before joining the University he was employed by the Vehicle Performance Division of the Office of Research and Engineering at the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in Washington,D.C. During the span of his career,Brickhouse has investigated numerous aircraft accidents and safety events. Since entering academia, he has been involved in research surrounding flight operational quality assurance (FOQA), airport ground safety, and the use of flight recorders in accident investigation. Brickhouse holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering with minors in Mathematics/Aviation Safety and an M.S. in Aeronautical Science with a specialization in Aviation/Aerospace Safety Systems.He is active in the University Aviation Association and is a full member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators.

Bill Martin Professor of Safety Science
M.A.S.,Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Martin is a full professor in the Applied Aviation Sciences Department at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach,Fla.,campus. He teaches courses in aerospace and aviation safety, safety program management,aircraft crash and emergency management, and homeland security at the undergraduate level, and airport operations safety at the graduate level.He also teaches in the University’s Professional Safety Certificate Program.Martin has been at Embry-Riddle since 1970 and has taught aviation-related subjects since 1965.His experience at the University includes serving as the dean of the College of Aviation Technology and as chief flight instructor. He also has military experience as an aviator,a safety officer, and an instructor pilot.Martin is a member of the Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Working Group and is a graduate of the American Association of Airport Executives’ Basic and Advanced Safety and Operations Specialist School.

Jayme Nichols Assistant Professor
M.S.,Central Missouri State University

Nichols is the director of the CASE Professional Short Course Program,an assistant professor in the Applied Aviation Sciences department, and an instructor for the Department of Distance Learning.She teaches aviation safety program management, flight safety, and human factors in aviation safety.She has served in accident/claims investigation for the AVEMCO aviation insurance company and as safety manager and training records manager for Peninsula Airways.

Jim Ramsay Associate Professor of Safety Science
Ph.D, MA, CSP

Prior to arriving at Embry-Riddle, Dr. Ramsay was a professor of health and safety at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and professor of safety sciences at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

With undergraduate training in biology, chemistry, and German, Dr. Ramsay completed an MA in business, majoring in health services administration from University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1988. His doctoral training is in health services research (a combined program in industrial engineering and preventive medicine) with a doctoral minor in research methods and statistics, also at UW Madison.

Publications and research interests include the relationships between environmental health, air, land, food and water resources and homeland security; the economic evaluation of health care and occupational safety programs, and the integration of environmental health, homeland security and occupational safety and health programs.

Courses taught include environmental security, fundamentals of emergency management, introduction to homeland security, fundamentals of homeland security systems, business skills for the homeland security professional, senior practicum in homeland security, advanced emergency management, epidemiology, economic evaluation of health and safety programs, safety management, environmental health, fundamentals of industrial hygiene, research methods and statistics.

Mark Friend- Professor and Chair, Applied Aviation Sciences
Ed.D., CSP

Friend holds an Ed.D. in Safety Management, is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP),and is a professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). He has 30 years of experience in higher education.Currently he serves as professor and chair of the Applied Aviation Sciences Department. Previously he was a professor of safety and director of the Center for Applied Technology at East Carolina University. He also served as chair of the Occupational Safety and Health Department at Murray State University after teaching at West Virginia University, Fairmont State College,and Waynesburg College.

His text, Fundamentals of Occupational Safety and Health, a top-selling book in the field, is currently in its third edition.He has also published several articles on safety and safety management.Friend serves on the editorial board of Occupational Hazards and is active as a consultant, speaker,and trainer in safety management. He received the 2003 PPG Safety Educator of the Year award from ASSE, the West Virginia University/National Safety Management Society Achievement Award, and is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Education.
