Research in the College of Engineering

The College of Engineering continues to improve in funded research, with authorized grants from public and private entities such as the National Science Foundation, Florida Space Grant Consortium, NASA, Mistral (MecanAir), Embraer, FRASCA, Florida Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, Lockheed-Martin, Guidant Corporation, and Veritas Software. The funding sources represent continuing relationships and new relationships being developed between faculty, researchers, and the engineering community.

Faculty within the College have also been active in scholarly publications in 2004. Fifty refereed technical articles were published by 15 different College of Engineering faculty in technical journals, refereed conference proceedings, textbooks, and invited papers in the calendar year. In addition, faculty throughout the College are active as conference presenters, providing invited lectures; consultants to industry, providing peer reviews;  and serving on technical committees across the engineering spectrum.

The Engineering Research Center was recently established under the College of Engineering and has been successful in attracting funding from industry partners. Under the leadership of Peter Pierpont the center has led the College in funding and allowed faculty and the College to become involved in applied applications of research with direct benefits to industry. The research center is supported by faculty from the Aerospace and Engineering Sciences departments during the past year and funds graduate students through stipends and tuition reimbursement.

Another accomplishment within the College during the past year was formal creation of research labs. While coordination among faculty existed on an informal basis, the labs will allow faculty organizations to pursue research in topics by combining areas of interest and expertise. The research labs allow synergistic activities to occur for the pursuit of funding among the faculty in the College.
