Robust Automatic Speech Recognition for Aviation Applications
  • PI Jianhua Liu

    CO-I Andrew Schneider

  • The goal of this project is to develop speech recognition models that can be used in aviation contexts.

Rocket Engineering
  • PI Eric Perrell

  • A number of related projects to design, build, test, and fly high powered rockets with solid and liquid propellant propulsion systems, for professional competitions, and access to space.
Rocketry as Testing Platforms for Payloads
  • PI Pedro LLanos

    CO-I Sathya Gangadharan

  • Design, assemble and launch small rockets as testing platforms to test small payloads which are flown aboard suborbital flight vehicles. We have successfully launched Level 1, Level 2 rockets, and we are in the process of finalizing the Level 3 rocket.

S

S.T.E.M. Outreach
  • PI Yosef Allam

  • This research project is a study on the effectiveness and the affects of a STEM subject class for the three main levels of public education: Elementary, Middle, and High School.
Safety Systems, Culture, and Passengers’ Willingness to Fly in Autonomous Air Taxis
  • PI Kenneth Ward

    CO-I Scott Winter

  • As city populations grow, the transportation industry plans to alleviate traffic congestion by introducing the urban air mobility (UAM) concept, in which small passenger and cargo aircraft augment metropolitan transportation networks. A key component of UAM is that of air taxis, which are on-demand air services for individuals and small groups. In addition, UAM companies are designing the aircraft to operate fully autonomously: The intent is for the vehicles to arrive and transport people from point to point without input from human pilots.

Satellite Images for Aviation Interests
  • PI Frederick Mosher

  • Development of geostationary satellite images which will detect aviation weather hazards, including nighttime fog, volcanic ash, and thunderstorms.
Seaplane design analysis: Focus on structure factor optimization
  • PI Alberto Mello

    CO-I Soham Bahulekar

    CO-I Sergio Butkewitshch

    CO-I Wesley Queiroz

  • In this work, a design optimization is being investigated considering possible hydrodynamic and structural advantages aiming to reduce the structure weight factor, with a trade-off between fluid dynamics and structural aspects.
Searching For Subdwarf B Long Orbital Period Binary Systems And Single Stars Using The Light Time Delay Method
  • PI Tomomi Otani

  • Our group, which includes both graduate and undergraduate students, studies the formation of subdwarf B (sdB) stars by investigating their binarity through stellar pulsations. We use photometry data from the TESS space telescope to measure precise pulsation frequencies, distinguish between binary and single-star systems, and determine orbital solutions for candidate binaries. This research is supported by NASA funding.
Secret Sharing Over a Gaussian Broadcast Channel: Optimal Coding Scheme Design and Deep Learning Approach at Short Blocklength
  • PI Rumia Sultana

  • We consider a secret sharing model where a dealer shares a secret with several participants through a Gaussian broadcast channel such that predefined subsets of participants can reconstruct the secret and all other subsets of participants cannot learn any information about the secret.
Sediment Transport
  • PI Shahrdad Sajjadi

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain results from well-controlled laboratory experiments for rough turbulent oscillatory boundary layers over wavy surfaces for both mean and second-order turbulent statistics.
Self-Sustained Flow-Acoustic Interactions in Airfoil Transitional Boundary Layers
  • PI Vladimir Golubev

    CO-I Reda Mankbadi

  • This work carries out collaborative theoretical, experimental and numerical investigations of flow-acoustic resonant interactions in transitional airfoils which are responsible for sudden appearance of prominent acoustic tones and unsteady aerodynamic fluctuations in low-Reynolds-number airfoils.
Shielded UAS Operations Detect and Avoid
  • PI Hever Moncayo

  • This effort is intended to identify risks and recommend solutions to the FAA that enable shielded UAS operations
