A flight instrument enabling a pilot to intercept and precisely follow a predefined GPS track. The instrument — known as a GPS steering indicator — provides a visual display which is similar in appearance to other aircraft instruments (and therefore instantly recognizable to nearly all pilots). However, the instrument is preferably differentiated somewhat in its visual appearance to convey to the pilot the fact that it displays steering commands rather than cross track error. An indicator needle deflects to instruct the pilot which way to turn and how much to turn in order to intercept and fly along a predefined GPS track. By centering the indicator needle, the pilot maintains the desired instantaneous track.

The method allows for proxies and/or subjective information on hazards that may arrive asynchronously and with coarse temporal and spatial accuracy to be converted into a standard fine granularity four dimensional hazard probability grid. The grid is created automatically, without the need for expert human interpretation, can provide visualization of the four dimensional hazard volumes and may be used directly by decision support tools without the need for expert human interpretation.

The aircraft is capable of alternating operation between the electric motor and internal combustion engine as often as required at altitude. The aircraft can be landed using either the internal combustion engine or the electric motor. The transition of power from the internal combustion engine to the electric motor and back is performed through a hybrid clutch and pulley assembly that interconnects the internal combustion engine propeller flange to the propeller driveshaft. The electric motor is connected to the hybrid assembly through belts and sheaves. The electric motor throttle is controlled in the cockpit.

The hybrid clutch assembly includes a hybrid clutch, a drive belt housing, a hybrid clutch assembly shaft, and an adapter plate. The hybrid clutch connects to the drive belt housing a hybrid clutch assembly shaft. The adapter plate enables connection of the hybrid clutch to the internal combustion engine propeller flange. The drive belt housing enables connection of the hybrid clutch to the propeller. The DC motor is connected to the drive belt housing drive belts.

A hot wire anemometer circuit has a calibrate subcircuit and an operate subcircuit which are selectively invoked via a user-activate mode switch. The calibrate subcircuit includes a detector configured to compare an amplified sensor voltage with an amplified drive voltage and output an indicator signal when the two voltages match. The drive voltage is derived from a user-adjusted drive resistance of a bridge subcircuit. The operate circuit includes a feedback loop which provides a signal to a bride node of a bridge circuit. After a sensor is connected to the anemometer circuit, the drive resistance is adjusted until the indicator signal is produced, signifying that the circuit is tuned and impedances are matched to prevent oscillations. A slewing network protects the sensor by shorting the drive resistance upon switching the anemometer circuit to the calibrate mode from the operate mode, and gradually restoring the drive resistance when switching back.
