Dellavonte Hune’s journey from homelessness to success via the Marine Corps and Embry‑Riddle.

What started as a way for Dellavonte Hune (’22, ’23, ’24) to find purpose after his military career put him on a path to success that, as a child, he never dreamed possible.

A Path Reimagined: Dellavonte Shares His Story

As a child, Dellavonte wasn’t sure where he’d end up. He certainly didn’t think he’d end up as a Ph.D. candidate with multiple degrees from Embry‑Riddle hanging on his wall. His inspiring story deserves to be told in his own powerful words:

I never could have imagined that I’d be where I am today. If you had told 15-year-old me — the kid bouncing from house to house, sometimes sleeping in a 1999 Chrysler Neon — that one day I’d have multiple degrees and be on the path to earning a doctorate, I probably would have laughed. Back then, life was just about survival.

Growing up in Madison, Wisconsin, my childhood was anything but easy. At 15, my mom lost our housing, and from that moment on, stability felt like a luxury I couldn’t afford. I stayed wherever I could — friends’ houses, my English teacher’s home, even my car. But through it all, I found solace in writing. Words became my escape, my therapy and, eventually, my purpose.

At 20, I made a decision that would change my life forever — I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps gave me the structure, discipline and sense of belonging I had been searching for. But when my time in the service came to an end, I found myself facing a new kind of challenge: Who was I without the uniform?

I knew education would be the key to my future, but stepping into college while still serving wasn’t easy. Thankfully, Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University made that transition smooth.

His transition wasn’t just smooth — it was noteworthy. Dellavonte chose Embry‑Riddle because of its excellent reputation and top rankings for veterans. In quick succession, he earned four degrees from Embry‑Riddle: Associate in Science degrees in both Aviation Business Administration and Technical Management, a Bachelor of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and a Master of Business Administration in Aviation.

Again, Dellavonte’s words speak for themselves:

I realized I loved learning, growing and pushing myself beyond what I thought was possible — and I’m not stopping now. This July, I’ll be starting my Doctor of Business Administration at Edgewood College, focusing on Leadership and AI Integration in Business Decision Making within the logistics and supply chain industry.

Through all of this, I’ve held onto three words: resilience, consistency and patience. Those words have carried me through every challenge, every late night, every moment of doubt. My journey is far from over, but if there’s one thing I know for sure — I will never stop. I will never slow down.

To everyone who has supported me, encouraged me or even just believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself: thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope to continue making you proud. And for anyone out there who feels like their dreams are out of reach — trust me, they aren’t. Keep pushing. Your story is still being written.

Dellavonte works as an account manager at Stoughton Trailers and stays connected with Embry‑Riddle by investing in future Eagles and encouraging students to “get out in your community and make connections and then make an impact — some way, somehow.”

Thank you, Dellavonte, for sharing your story with us. You are quite an inspiration.
