Tyler DeZell gained clarity, specialized skills and valuable experience in Aviation Business Administration during his summer internship at Allegiant.

Early Exposure Pays Off

When Tyler DeZell (’26) first considered his college choices, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University stood out. Not only did it offer the Bachelor of Science in Aviation Business Administration degree he sought, but DeZell’s early experiences at the university’s Aerospace Career Academy – K-12 Education & Outreach summer camps solidified his decision.

A senior at the Daytona Beach Campus, DeZell’s courses in corporate finance, business data analytics and airline management have equipped him with the technical skills, industry knowledge and professionalism necessary to stand out in a competitive field. Leadership roles in student organizations and project-based classes further honed his teamwork and communication abilities.

Aiming for Allegiant

Dezell’s internship search was targeted and strategic. “I knew I wanted to work for a mid-sized airline and targeted my application towards airlines like Allegiant.”

Allegiant Travel Company, headquartered in Nevada, presented the perfect fit for DeZell. He was excited to intern there in Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) this past summer. Each day brought new challenges, ranging from conducting ad hoc analyses for senior leadership to building financial models for long-term projects and from preparing capital expenditure requests to collaborating with multiple departments.

The Embry-Riddle Advantage

DeZell’s responsibilities spanned monthly deliverables expected of full-time analysts, providing invaluable real-world experience. For an airport infrastructure cost trends project, he developed a model to analyze historical costs at various airports, enabling the company to track and compare expenses across locations.

In collaboration with another intern, DeZell developed a dynamic discounted cash flow model for a potential aircraft retrofit. Leading this project and presenting the results to vice presidents and company leadership was a highlight, pushing him to grow both professionally and personally.

“During my FP&A internship at Allegiant, I applied knowledge from the classroom to real-world financial analysis, forecasting and budgeting. This experience strengthened my analytical and communication skills, aligning with the College of Business’ mission to develop adaptable, future-ready professionals.”

Sharp financial acumen proved critical to DeZell’s success, but it was his specialized knowledge of the aviation industry that gave him a competitive edge. His internship reinforced his conviction that aligning one's passion with a profession, backed by a strong educational foundation, opens doors.

Clarity for the Future

“Having been immersed in an environment where I could make real decisions and add value solidified my decision on where I want to be,” Dezell said. “And if I want to pivot later on, I now have the real-world professional experience needed to be a competitive candidate wherever I want to go.”

At the conclusion of his internship, DeZell received and accepted a return offer to join Allegiant again next summer — a testament to the value of his work and the impact he made. “My internship with Allegiant was a fun, valuable and rewarding experience — one I hope every student has the opportunity to pursue and achieve.”

Embry-Riddle’s O’Maley College of Business has supported DeZell’s growth and success along the way. He credits Dr. Jennifer Hinebaugh, associate professor and undergraduate program coordinator, and his peers, especially Giovanni Di Neena, with making a lasting impact on him.

“The aviation business degree at Embry-Riddle proved its value every day in the internship. Being an intern with a strong financial and analytical background, paired with an abundance of industry knowledge, helped me obtain higher-level projects early on and complete them within the span of my internship by minimizing the learning curve.”

Seize Each Opportunity

When asked for his advice to future students, DeZell encouraged, “Take every internship opportunity that aligns with your goals or provides the chance to shape what they might be.”

“My internship with Allegiant reinforced that success becomes truly attainable when your passion aligns with your profession and is backed by a strong educational foundation,” he shared. “This experience showed me that when you’re pursuing work you are genuinely motivated by and are equipped with the right skills and knowledge, opportunities for growth and achievement naturally follow.”
