A student-powered study casts new light on the causes of a rare star’s evolutionary mystery.

When you hear the term "luminous blue variables," astronomy may not be the first thing that comes to mind.

But these stellar giants — LBVs for short — are some of the most fascinating objects in space. Massive and unstable, these stars can burn a million times brighter than the Sun. Throughout their evolution, LBVs fluctuate in mass, color and brightness. Eventually, they shed their mass in explosive eruptions and transform — often into an even brighter form.

What causes the wild changes in LBVs’ qualities? That question has puzzled astronomers for centuries.

At Embry‑Riddle's Prescott Campus, Dr. Noel D. Richardson, assistant professor of Physics and Astronomy, led a three-year study ending in fall 2024 to investigate the mystery. The project included undergraduate astronomy students Becca Spejcher (’24) and Mari Beltran (’23) and two high school interns.

We spoke with some of the student researchers who helped shine a new light on these strange stars.

A Team United

Becca Spejcher wasn’t just a student on the project — she wrote most of the team’s code, mentored two charter school interns and co-authored a paper published in The Astronomical Journal.

“I was a campus academic mentor,” she said, “so I already knew a lot about mentoring students from a less professional standpoint, but working with Eddie and Payton taught me how to be a research mentor and guide younger students who are just as excited as we are to do research.”

Those interns, Edward Avila and Payton Butler, were seniors at BASIS Prescott, a STEM-focused charter school. They processed data using Jupyter, a web-based platform, relying on code Spejcher developed.

In the project’s first year, Mari Beltran teamed up with Spejcher to reduce data for candidate LBVs and compute Fourier transforms for the stars’ light curves.

Outside the lab, both undergrads were heavily involved on campus. Beltran joined a NASA mission aboard SOFIA, the world’s largest flying observatory, helping map water on the moon. Spejcher spoke at the naming ceremony for the exoplanet Awohali, which was identified by the largest telescope ever launched into space.

Growing Through Research

For Spejcher, working side by side with Richardson was a defining experience. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be able to start a project from the beginning and see it all the way through to the end,” she said.

She emphasized the importance of resilience, “I learned that research is going to come with a lot of ups and downs, a lot of setbacks and a lot of leaps forward — but that is all part of the process.”

Spejcher also stressed writing clean, readable code. It’s not enough to get results — others need to be able to understand and build on your work.

The team pulled data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and compared it to data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). The biggest challenge? “Figuring out how to normalize and detrend the TESS data and compare it to ASAS-SN,” Spejcher said.

After early results didn’t line up, she reworked the calculations entirely. Avila and Butler helped expand the data set, learning valuable coding and problem-solving skills along the way — skills Avila now applies in his computer engineering studies.

Avila’s passion for space started early. “I've been interested in all astronomical objects ever since I was nine years old,” he said. So, when the chance to study LBVs came up, he knew it was the perfect project.

A Feeling Like No Other

Despite all their effort, the team didn’t find the breakthrough results they hoped for. Still, as Richardson put it, “Even when you don’t find such things, it is worth sharing this as a scientist.”

But there were surprises.

While reviewing the team’s graphical analysis of their data, Richardson, whose prior discoveries sent ripples through the science community, saw something unexpected. “The fact that we were able to not only get results but to get results that were even more interesting than expected was a feeling like no other,” said Spejcher.

What they found supported a newer theory: That all LBVs shed mass to avoid reaching their “Eddington luminosity” — a theoretical limit on how bright a star can shine before radiation pushes material away. Essentially, these stars may erupt to save themselves from self-destruction.

After their outbursts — lasting months or even years — LBVs stabilize, potentially becoming Wolf-Rayet stars in a final effort to prolong their life.

Living Witnesses

Spejcher captured the wonder that drives many space scientists:

“Learning more about the universe will help us learn more about ourselves, how we might have gotten here, what will happen to us a million years from now and, of course, everyone’s favorite topic — whether we are alone in the universe.”

She pointed out poetically that we are fortunate to be living witnesses to the evolution of this unbelievable unknown.

A Glimpse at the Future

Spejcher used the first half of the LBV study for her senior thesis. The full project went on to be published in The Astronomical Journal, one of the largest astronomy journals in the world and an open-access journal anyone can read for free.

Now, she’s pursuing a Master’s in Astrophysics at Tufts University, studying how the light from stars changes when planets pass in front of them. She’s grateful for her classes at Embry‑Riddle, especially Dr. Brian Rachford’s Astrophysics II course, which gave her an edge in grad school.

Beltran is now attending graduate school at DePaul University. Avila is exploring professional pathways after high school and remains confident, offering some timeless encouragement to all: “You can put your skills into anything you want to.”

An Enduring Mystery

The mystery of LBVs remains — and that’s part of what makes them so fascinating.

The project was designed to make immersive education tangible, personal and lasting, helping students connect what they learn in the classroom to what they were experiencing abroad.

Inspired by Japan’s traditional goshuinchō, temple stamp books used to collect calligraphy and seals, the Kikōchō takes the form of a beautifully structured, accordion-style travelogue. It blends academic rigor with personal reflection and encourages students to navigate both structured coursework and immersive exploration as they travel across Japan.

Before launching the concept, Derek ran the idea past his Japanese colleagues, and the name, coined from the Japanese words “kikō” (travelogue) and “chō” (book or registry), was met with enthusiastic approval. And so, the Kikōchō was born.

Two Worlds, One Journal

What makes the Kikōchō so distinctive is its dual-orientation format, a physical and symbolic fusion of Western and Japanese cultures.

One side, opening left to right, reflects Western academic structure. Students compiled lecture notes, completed assignments and documented academic knowledge gleaned from professors.

Flip the journal to open right to left, and students enter a space for personal reflection and cultural discovery, including temple visits, food explorations, street sketches, mementos, stamps and stories from across Japan.

The shared front cover and absence of a spine reinforce the journal’s deeper message: that academic growth and cultural exploration are not separate experiences, but instead, inseparable parts of the same journey.

A Personal Artifact of Global Perspective

Students were encouraged to use the Kikōchō to document their architectural and cultural journey through Japan, exploring how design reflects deeper social and historical contexts.

Over time, the Kikōchō became a one-of-a-kind artifact: a canvas for growth, curiosity and connection. Many students describe their finished Kikōchō as a handmade, deeply personalized keepsake of their time immersed in another culture that they’ll revisit for years to come.

Presenting her study abroad experience at the Florida Lessons from Abroad Conference, Abirami Srenivasan (‘27) offered a firsthand look at how the Kikōchō shaped her learning. Her reflection highlighted the journal’s ability to turn a study abroad trip into a transformative journey where knowledge, creativity and identity converge.

Navy veteran Kirk West transitioned from the flight deck to the classroom, aspiring to create aviation opportunities for disadvantaged youth.

For Kirk West (‘25), pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics isn’t just another chapter in his story — it’s a high-flying waypoint in an already impactful journey. With a lifetime shaped by discipline, ambition and service, Kirk is a testament to perseverance, navigating challenges like a plane through turbulent skies.

“I was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where challenges were as common as the southern heat,” Kirk said. “Growing up in an underprivileged community taught me to adapt, persevere and dream big.”

Kirk's journey from the bustling flight decks of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) to the classes of Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide is anything but ordinary. With a flawless 4.0 GPA, his commitment to academic and professional excellence mirrors the precision required in the aviation industry. His story is a radiant reminder that no sky is too high for those willing to rise.

Navigating High-Pressure Skies

Kirk’s ability to thrive under pressure made him an asset during his six years in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a petty officer 2nd class E5 air traffic control supervisor. “I led a team of 34 sailors, ensuring precision and safety for thousands of aircraft,” he said. “The work was demanding but rewarding.” His excellence was recognized with two Navy Achievement Medals in 2019 and 2020, and he was named the 2019 Sailor of the Year for the CVN 72 USS Abraham Lincoln during a forward deployment.

Beyond his military service, Kirk has dedicated himself to guiding others. “As a founding executive officer of the National Society of Leadership and Success [Embry‑Riddle's Worldwide branch], I’ve encouraged others to chase their dreams,” he said. 

In fall 2024, he became the first National Society of Leadership and Success Worldwide Chapter scholarship recipient. “This scholarship isn’t just financial support — it’s validation that hard work and leadership make a difference,” he said. Kirk was further honored in the fall of 2024 by serving as the foundation’s membership chair — both milestones he modestly omitted during his interview.

Kirk’s impact has also been nationally recognized. He was awarded the Online Member Scholarship from The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) Foundation, a prestigious honor granted to only 20 students nationwide. Additionally, he serves as treasurer for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), blending his passion for leadership with his love for aviation.

Kirk currently applies his expertise as the lead air traffic controller at Fort Greely Army base in Delta Junction, Alaska, overseeing air traffic operations and training controllers to uphold the highest safety standards. “My work challenges me daily, but it’s also incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that my work directly contributes to aviation safety inspires me.”

It was about understanding how data drives decision making in aviation, a skill I now use regularly in my professional role.” Similarly, Aviation Legislation with Professor Burns deepened his appreciation for the regulations governing the industry. “It helped me see how leadership and compliance intersect to ensure aviation safety.”

Aviation Safety with Professor Sevillian was particularly meaningful, “This course challenged me to think critically about risk management and safety culture. It has enhanced my approach to my current responsibilities overseeing air traffic operations.”

Embry‑Riddle’s dynamic learning environment also enriched Kirk’s education. Some classes involved live discussions, fostering direct interaction with classmates and professors, while others were self-paced, accommodating his demanding schedule. “I’ll never forget a collaborative project in Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAV) & Operations, where I worked with classmates from diverse aviation backgrounds to design a UAV mission plan. It felt less like coursework and more like contributing to real-world innovation.”

“The support from professors who care about their students’ success has been remarkable. They understand the challenges of balancing a full-time job with education and go out of their way to ensure every student feels empowered to succeed.”

A Launchpad for the Future

As graduation approaches, Kirk is already planning his next ascent. “After graduating in spring 2025, I will attend law school in fall 2026,” he shared. His goal? To combine his aviation expertise with J.D. and MBA joint degrees to create educational opportunities for underprivileged youth. “I want to introduce young people to careers in aviation — whether as airport CEOs, pilots or technicians.”

His vision extends beyond personal success. “I’m not just looking to launch planes — I’m looking to launch careers.” Inspired by his own journey, Kirk hopes to pave the way for others who, like him, grew up in challenging circumstances. “Aviation isn’t just for the privileged. It’s for anyone willing to put in the work, dream big and rise above.”

Mergen Alimaganbetov (’21), who earned a Ph.D. in Engineering Physics at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University, has dedicated his career to advancing our understanding of space physics.

Today, he works as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Princeton University’s Space Physics Lab, contributing to the Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP), a NASA mission set to launch at the end of this year.

A Career in Space Physics and Instrumentation

At Princeton, Mergen is part of a team working on the Solar Wind and Pickup Ions (SWAPI) instrument, from its development in the cleanroom to final calibration. His laboratory features advanced calibration facilities, including High Voltage Ion Source and Ultra High Vacuum chambers, ensuring precision in instrument testing.

A typical day for Mergen includes research on data from NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer, the IMAP predecessor, which has been mapping Energetic Neutral Atoms in the outer heliosphere since 2009. His work helps uncover how the heliosphere reacts to solar cycles, revealing its dynamic, "breathing" nature over time.

Beyond his research, Mergen also engages with students enrolled in the AST 250 and 251 Space Physics courses, providing hands-on experience in space instrument design and testing. His passion for teaching, cultivated at Embry‑Riddle, continues to be an integral part of his professional journey.

The Embry‑Riddle Experience

Mergen’s fascination with space instrumentation began in high school, where he admired the precision required to design and build spacecraft. Embry‑Riddle provided the perfect environment to nurture his interest, exposing him to data analysis and research opportunities that laid the foundation for his Ph.D. work on Sun-Earth solar wind dynamics.

He credits much of his academic growth to the mentorship of Professor Anatoly V. Streltsov, whose guidance shaped his research skills. Challenges and Growth

Balancing between research and teaching during his Ph.D. was one of the biggest challenges Mergen faced. However, this experience taught him valuable time management skills and the ability to efficiently multitask. He emphasizes that his time at Embry‑Riddle not only equipped him with technical expertise but also instilled confidence, paving the way for his career in academia and space physics.

His work highlights the attention to detail and precision required in space instrumentation.

Opportunities and Challenges in Space Physics

Mergen sees funding as one of the biggest challenges in space physics, as securing financial support for high-tech space projects is always a hurdle. However, he remains optimistic about the growing emphasis on space weather research, as highlighted in the National Academies’ Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics. He hopes for increased support from NASA, NOAA and other agencies to advance space physics research.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, Mergen plans to transition from instrument development to scientific research with IMAP. He eagerly anticipates the groundbreaking data the spacecraft will provide, offering new insights into the heliosphere and the Very Local Interstellar Medium (VLISM). With IMAP positioned at the L1 Lagrange point, its ten instruments will work together to enhance our understanding of the Sun’s interaction with the interstellar environment.

In a world where digital security threats are growing, Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University’s College of Business, Security and Intelligence (CBSI) is leading the way in preparing students for the challenges of the modern workforce. Among these opportunities is a partnership with Verensics, an innovative AI-driven security and intelligence software company that automates investigative interviews for employers. Interning with Verensics is a prime example of how students can apply their academic knowledge in a dynamic, high-impact setting.

CBSI professor Alan Saquella (aka Embry‑Riddle's “human lie detector”) cherishes the relationship he has formed with Verensics. “As a polygraph examiner, I was immediately intrigued when I first researched Verensics — it gave me chills. Verensics revolutionizes applicant selection and investigative processes, setting a new industry standard. It represents the future, and the partnership I’ve built with Verensics’ founders continues to create incredible opportunities for our students.”

After a series of successful internships with Verensics over the recent years, we followed up our eye-opening 2023 introduction to Verensics with a deeper investigation of this mutually rewarding partnership.

An Internship Experience That Fosters Growth

Verensics is a fast-growing software-as-a-service (SaaS) company founded in 2017. Working with government agencies and private-sector clients across multiple industries, Verensics applies innovative technology to enhance security, compliance and investigative efforts for employers.

Russ Law, co-founder of Verensics along with Yariv Lis, explained that due to the nature of Verensics’ client data, working with interns in Embry‑Riddle's Security and Intelligence Studies program has been ideal. However, their internship opportunities vary according to Verensics’ current projects. “We also look for students who are in leadership positions on or off campus and who are strong writers. Recently, we have more frequently asked students about their interest in technology and AI.”

Unlike traditional internships where tasks may be narrowly defined, Verensics interns work on a variety of assignments that require critical thinking, technical skills and close collaboration.

Because Verensics operates as a small startup company, Law highlighted that interns take on responsibilities crucial to the company’s operations, often working with the executive team, including Law himself. “Since we are a startup, every team member, including interns, plays an essential role. We ensure that interns contribute meaningfully to projects, from research and data analysis to client training sessions.”

Law praises the consistency of CBSI interns for their energy, professionalism and intelligence. These qualities, combined with their academic training, make them valuable contributors to Verensics' work. “We are lucky to have developed this partnership,” he said.

Speaking with Current Intern Armaan Needles

Armaan Needles (’26), a Global Security and Intelligence Studies major, found his internship at Verensics to be a transformative experience. His primary project involved transforming raw data into user-friendly reports for clients. Instead of presenting thousands of rows of data in spreadsheets, he developed automated processes to generate visual representations — charts, tables and structured reports — to make complex data sets more accessible.

To overcome this challenge, Needles applied skills learned from his coursework, particularly in BA 222: Business Analytics Tools, which provided a strong foundation in Excel and data analysis. He also credited mentorship from Professor Saquella and library resources, including books about advanced Excel functions, for helping him automate complex data processes. Seeing a functional prototype take shape was one of the most rewarding aspects of the internship, reinforcing the value of persistence and problem-solving in data analytics.

Beyond technical skills, Needles gained deeper insights into how data-driven solutions intersect with security applications. His exposure to AI-powered investigative tools broadened his understanding of emerging technologies and their role in intelligence gathering in private and public sectors.

“This internship,” he said, “has expanded my understanding of the field and provided me with valuable skills that will enhance my career prospects.”

Speaking with Former Intern Julianna Crozier

Julianna Crozier (’24), who graduated with a master’s degree in Security and Intelligence Studies, interned with Verensics in 2024 and has since secured a job in a related field. Reflecting on her experience, Crozier highlighted the depth of the investigative work she participated in.

“I worked on reports analyzing data from prison guard interviews, comparing their initial hiring responses to later assessments of their performance and continued employment,” she said. “Understanding how to categorize and present this data was a challenge, but it was crucial for delivering actionable intelligence to stakeholders.”

One of the most valuable lessons Crozier learned was how to present raw data in a meaningful way. With Verensics’ software collecting vast amounts of information, she had to determine how to extract the most relevant insights and organize them effectively. Excel played a crucial role in this process, and she credited guidance from Law, along with her own background in marketing, for helping her develop best practices in data visualization.

Embry‑Riddle Prescott’s CBSI curricula played a significant role in preparing her for this work, particularly classes in corporate investigations and interview techniques. “Professor Saquella’s classes gave me a strong foundation in understanding how investigative interviews work and why the Verensics approach is different from a standard test or assessment.”

For Crozier, the internship not only provided her with technical expertise but also reinforced the importance of adaptability in the security field. “Verensics was a great opportunity that I am glad to have experienced,” she said. “I still use my knowledge gained in the internship to try to better the processes I see in the security world today.”

Nicolas Gachancipa’s (’21) curiosity for technology and space began in Bogotá, Colombia, where he was born and raised. Introduced to Embry‑Riddle by a friend, he was drawn to the university’s renowned engineering programs and strong reputation in aviation and technology. Today, he is part of Google’s AI Research team, specializing in AI development for Google Hardware, particularly Pixel phones.

A Career in AI and Machine Learning

At Google, Nicolas focuses on developing and deploying machine learning models in hardware devices. His daily work involves coding, researching and analyzing extensive datasets to improve AI performance. Collaboration is key in his role, as he works with teams from New York, California and Taiwan, including Google Silicon and DeepMind. Beyond his technical contributions, he is actively involved in HOLA — an employee resource group for Hispanics at Google — where he helps organize social, volunteer and career development events.

The Embry‑Riddle Experience

Reflecting on his time at Embry‑Riddle, Nicolas credits the university for equipping him with the technical skills and strong work ethic that have propelled his career. The rigorous academic environment helped him develop perseverance and discipline, qualities that have proven invaluable in his field.

His research experience played a significant role in shaping his professional path. During his sophomore year, he joined Associate Professor Dr. Kshitija Deshpande’s physics team, where he enhanced his coding skills by developing machine learning algorithms for atmospheric physics data analysis. 

He later worked on a Computational Mathematics Capstone Project with Associate Professor of Physics Dr. Mihhail Berezovski and researchers from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to create a computational model for detecting radioactive sources in urban environments. These early research experiences fueled his passion for AI and data science, setting the foundation for his future work at Google.

A Career at the Forefront of AI

Throughout his career, Nicolas has contributed to several impactful projects. During his time at Airbus, he worked on a CAD program for aircraft design, an experience that took him to England for a year. At Google, he initially focused on improving communication products like Google Meet and Voice, working on features such as security enhancements and spam detection. Today, he is thrilled to be part of a team that is shaping the future of AI and its applications in consumer technology.

“The fast advancements in artificial intelligence are reshaping our society and how we interact with the digital world,” Nicolas shares. “It’s an exciting time to be in this field, but it also requires continuous learning and adaptability.”

Advice for Future Engineers and Tech Enthusiasts

Nicolas encourages current Embry‑Riddle students to embrace challenges. “It’s the best way to grow, both personally and professionally. Take advantage of the great resources and faculty and always be open to learning new things.”

Computer Science major Ryan Ferguson leads ERAU Esports, one of the most popular clubs on campus, with 26 competitive teams.

In "Valorant," every move counts, every strategy matters, and for Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University's Ryan Ferguson (’26), those principles have guided his journey from casual gamer to president of ERAU Esports, the university’s esports club. “Valorant is all about teamwork and timing,” he says, a mindset he’s used to build Embry‑Riddle’s esports program into a competitive force.

With its blend of precise strategic teamwork and skill-based abilities, Valorant has become a top title in competitive gaming and esports, yet it’s only one of many competitive games in the club. Under Ryan’s leadership, the esports community on the Daytona Beach Campus has grown into one of the largest student organizations, boasting over 340 active members and 160 competitive players across 25 teams, including "League of Legends," "Overwatch 2," "Rocket League" and "Rainbow Six Siege," among other titles.

Finding Community

Ryan’s path to competitive gaming wasn’t straightforward. Originally from New York, his love for being on the water initially led him toward naval architecture, but his interests eventually pivoted to computer science and, unexpectedly, esports. “Honestly, I wasn’t a huge gamer before college,” he admits. “I’d played video games in high school, but they weren’t a big part of my life. But at Embry‑Riddle, I found my community with the esports club and realized there was so much more to it.”

Today, Ryan’s presidency has transformed the club into a thriving community. “We try to be inclusive no matter the skill level,” Ryan explains. “It’s rewarding to give people a chance to join esports, whether or not they see themselves as ‘great players.’” By fostering spaces for everyone from beginners to top-ranked players, Ryan has elevated the club’s reputation in the collegiate esports landscape.

Gaming Competitions and Skill Development

Despite lacking high-level coaching and state-of-the-art facilities that rival programs enjoy, Embry‑Riddle’s top Valorant team has made an impressive mark. “Our top team took on some serious competition,” Ryan notes. “Even against Florida schools with fully-funded teams and salaried coaches, we held our own. It’s great to show that we can compete at that level.” The team’s success has made the eligible for multiple tournaments and competitions within the Florida esports scene — most notably the prestigious Peach Belt Cup, in which they hope to compete in the spring 2025 season.

Leading such a large and active organization and serving as treasurer of the Game Development Club has honed Ryan’s skills in managing people and processes — an “ult” he applies well beyond gaming. “Being president has definitely built my leadership skills,” he says. “I’m learning to delegate, to communicate clearly and to keep things running smoothly. It’s not just about playing; it’s about making sure everyone has a good experience.”

Under his guidance, the club has adopted a formal code of conduct to ensure safety and respect among members. “The last thing we want is for Embry‑Riddle’s name to be tarnished,” he adds. “Our code of conduct has made our club more inclusive.”

Ryan’s initiatives also extend beyond campus boundaries. In a recent partnership with Daytona State College, Ryan organized a series of online orientation events to ease students into college life. “We set up a bunch of online events with Daytona State,” he explains. “We knew there were a lot of new students feeling nervous about college, so we created spaces for them to connect and meet new people. It was amazing seeing students come out of their shells and find friendships.”

Making an On-Campus Impact

For Ryan, being part of esports at Embry‑Riddle means working on behalf of students he may never meet. “I’m organizing everything with a goal in mind: to leave a structure that works well even when I’m gone,” he says. His determination has already made waves, as the club’s budget has surged to over $17,000 last semester, and new collaborations with other campus clubs continue to develop. “The Student Government Association has been incredible, and my team of officers — just amazing. I couldn’t ask for better people.”

As he looks to the future, Ryan envisions esports as a bridge for engaging students who might otherwise remain disconnected from traditional campus life. “Embry‑Riddle’s gaming community is close-knit and diverse. Everyone here is open to learning and growing together,” he says. With his sights set on integrating esports into athletics, Ryan’s commitment to the club has the potential for lasting impact. “Once we’re part of athletics,” he says with a smile, “it’s going to be a game-changer.”

After he completes his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, he may literally become a game-changer. “My career goal is game development," Ryan says. "Honestly, anything in that field, whether it be game programming, game design or even esports design.”

Emily Diegel (’24, Computational Mathematics) has always had a passion for problem-solving. Now, as a Ph.D. student in Mathematics at Texas A&M University and a Data Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), she’s using that passion to tackle real-world challenges in national security.

A Path Defined by Mentorship and Discovery

Diegel’s journey to mathematics wasn’t linear. Initially drawn to Aerospace Engineering, after a year she realized that her true passion lay in computational mathematics and data science. That’s when she met Dr. Mihhail Berezovski, an associate professor of Mathematics, who would become a pivotal mentor in her career.

"Dr. Berezovski gave me real-world experience with industry and showed me the field where math intersects with national security," she says. "Without his guidance, I would not be where I am today."

Through Berezovski’s mentorship, Diegel began conducting research at the Nevada National Security Site, where she learned how to present research, write scientific reports and network in her field. These experiences led her to publish her research, present at international conferences — including in Saudi Arabia — and gain hands-on industry experience, all while still an undergraduate student.

From Embry‑Riddle to a Career in Data Science

After completing her undergraduate degree, Diegel landed an internship at the PNNL — one of the nation’s leading research institutions focused on science and technology advancements.

"Embry‑Riddle prepared me for both industry and research," she explains. "Through the Embry‑Riddle Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, I learned how to conduct research, communicate my findings and stand out in the job market."

Now, as a full-time Ph.D. student she balances coursework in applied mathematics and machine learning while continuing her role at PNNL.

"A typical day as a Ph.D. student involves a lot of studying and coursework. Most first-year students don’t dive into research right away, but I’ve been fortunate to keep my industry experience going at the same time."

The Reward of Research and Impactful Work

One of the most exciting moments in Diegel’s career so far was receiving acceptance letters to all three of her top-choice graduate programs.

"I spent months on applications, doing everything I could to stand out," she recalls. "When I got my first acceptance ... I was over the moon. That was the moment I realized that everything I had done at Embry‑Riddle was worth it."

Beyond academia, Diegel finds immense fulfillment in her work at PNNL.

"At the lab, I get to work on real-world problems that have a huge impact on the United States. I love the work I do in national security because it directly affects the people around me," she says.

Challenges, Opportunities and Advice for Future Scientists

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, Diegel sees both opportunities and challenges in its integration with national security.

"AI is advancing at such a rapid pace that it can be difficult to keep up, but it’s also one of the most powerful tools we have. Learning how to harness it effectively is crucial."

She also believes that success in data science and mathematics requires a unique skill set:

• A creative and open mindset to approach research from new angles
• Strong communication skills to present findings effectively
• A curiosity for learning that drives continuous growth

The Global Security and Intelligence Studies program has given Lauren Estrada the opportunity to do real-world geopolitical analysis that reaches an audience of intelligence professionals.

“I want to know how the world works — not just on a broad geopolitical scale, but the systems, networks and structures that shape what we see and don’t see,” says Lauren Estrada (’25), a Global Security and Intelligence Studies major at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University. That curiosity, paired with a sharp analytical mindset, led her to Embry‑Riddle, though it wasn’t her original plan.

“I was supposed to go to Mercer University for neuroscience,” she says. “I already had a scholarship lined up, but then an Embry‑Riddle recruiter visited my high school. I learned about the Global Security and Intelligence program, and right then, I switched paths.” It was a risk, but Lauren knew she wanted a future in intelligence. Neuroscience offered a way to understand behavior, but global security allowed her to analyze motives, threats, and patterns on a larger scale.

Sharpening Her Skills in Intelligence Writing

Once on campus, Lauren wasted no time immersing herself in the world of intelligence. She joined Eagle Eye Intelligence, Embry‑Riddle’s student-run publication with deep ties to the intelligence community.

“We have about 400 subscribers, some of whom are in the intelligence community,” she explains. “Whether they’re alumni who have entered the field and remain subscribed or connections we’ve made through professors over the years, Eagle Eye has been running for over 20 years.”

She started as a contributor and rose quickly, becoming assistant editor by her second semester, then associate editor, before taking an executive role. “I’ve had a hand in everything — from selecting which briefs to publish to training new writers,” she says. Now, as editor-in-chief, she leads a team of analysts. “It’s not just about editing,” she explains. “It’s about ensuring accuracy, eliminating bias and making sure the information we present is clear, factual and actionable.”

That commitment to precision is essential. “We make sure to verify multiple sources,” Lauren says. “Bias creeps in everywhere, from media sources to personal opinions. So we rely on structured analytic techniques to filter that out. We cross-check sources, separate fact from speculation and focus on quantitative data rather than qualitative.”

Internships That Put Theory Into Practice

Beyond the classroom, Lauren has gained hands-on experience through competitive internships. At Cybercore International, a cybersecurity and intelligence firm, she helped shape the company’s threat analysis division.

“It was a small business, and much of my work involved helping build the team itself,” she says. “Collaboration was key, especially with analysts specializing in cybersecurity. While they handled technical aspects, my partner and I focused on open-source intelligence, analyzing data from both the Dark Web and the clear web to piece together intelligence.”

She also worked directly with clients, presenting findings and offering insights on cyber threats.

Her next role at the cybersecurity company DarkTower, which specializes in threat intelligence and managed intelligence services, introduced her to the complexities of open-source intelligence. “I worked with Dark Web monitoring, using tools like Autopsy software, which gave me valuable experience utilizing industry-preferred tools,” she says. “The challenge wasn’t just finding the information — it was knowing what was relevant and how to communicate it effectively.” She also gained experience briefing clients, a skill she knows will be crucial in her future career.

Both internships reinforced her passion for intelligence work. “The world is increasingly interconnected,” Lauren says. “Cybersecurity is no longer just about technology; it’s a frontline issue in national security. A single vulnerability can have global consequences.”

Intelligence Focus: China and Foreign Policy

Among her key research interests, Lauren has dedicated significant time to studying China’s foreign policy and cyber strategy. At Eagle Eye Intelligence, she spearheaded multiple intelligence briefs examining China’s influence operations, digital espionage tactics and economic statecraft.

Alongside many researchers, she has been monitoring China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a massive infrastructure project designed to expand China’s economic and political influence through investments in roads, ports, railways, and digital networks.

Beyond traditional analysis, she is also researching China’s advancements in quantum technology, including its applications in communication, computing, and sensing — critical for military and industrial developments.

Overall, her research examines how this strategy strengthens China’s geopolitical reach and affects U.S. interests. She has worked on predictive assessments, looking at how China leverages cyber capabilities and economic influence to expand its global presence. “China operates on long-term strategic goals,” she explains. “Understanding their methods allows us to anticipate their next moves, especially in the digital domain.”

Expanding Research Horizons

In addition to her editorial and intelligence work, Lauren is also engaged in undergraduate research. Her research team was recently accepted to the National Conference for Undergraduate Research, where they will present their study, "Exploring Incentives and Barriers to Undergraduate Research," in Philadelphia this April.

"We focus on ways to teach cybersecurity learning across all disciplines," she explains. "Cyber threats impact every field, and we want to make sure cybersecurity education is accessible, no matter the major."

Joining the Intelligence Community

With graduation approaching in May, Lauren is preparing for her next move to Washington, D.C.

“My goal is to work in the intelligence community, ideally as an analyst focusing on cybersecurity or China’s foreign policy,” she says. Her studies, internships, and editorial experience have all positioned her for that next step.

As she looks ahead, Lauren is ready to take on the challenge. “I started this journey because I wanted to understand the world,” she says. “Now, I want to be part of shaping it.”

International student Lucas Cristaldi serves in the United States Air Force and is a full-time Aeronautics student. He shares his passion for space exploration with the public as a NASA Solar System Ambassador.

Lucas Cristaldi (’26) has always had his eyes on the skies. As a child in Brazil, he spent hours in the second-floor lounge of the airport, mesmerized by planes taking off and landing. “My parents would ask what I wanted to do, and I’d say, ‘Let’s go to the airport,’” he recalls with a laugh. His fascination with space took shape early, fueled by "Star Trek," "Star Wars" and documentaries about black holes. Now, as a NASA Solar System Ambassador, he’s on a mission to educate and inspire. “I was that space nerd. I wanted to know everything about astronomy, space exploration, black holes — all that fun stuff.”

From the Air Force to Embry‑Riddle

Now a student at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University, Cristaldi is taking his passion to new heights. He is pursuing a degree in Aeronautics with a minor in Space Operations and management, all while serving on active duty in the U.S. Air Force. His path to Embry‑Riddle began in an unexpected place: a one-person campus office at Moody Air Force Base.

“After finishing tech school and earning my Community College of the Air Force degree, I started looking into what classes I could transfer to Embry‑Riddle,” he explains. Initially, he pursued a management degree but later transitioned to a field that aligned more closely with his Air Force career goals.

A Journey From Brazil to the U.S. Air Force

Born and raised in Brazil, Cristaldi immigrated to the United States in 2018. Before joining the Air Force, he worked as a software developer in London and New York City. “I still hope to use those skills in some capacity,” he says, acknowledging his deep interest in both technology and aviation. While his childhood dream was to become a pilot, his priorities shifted with experience. “I always knew I wanted to stay close to aviation and, especially, space exploration.”

That commitment led him to the NASA Solar System Ambassadors program, a nationwide initiative that trains volunteers to engage the public with NASA missions. Cristaldi first learned about the program while deployed to Qatar in 2021.

“My supervisor at the time was also a space nerd,” he recalls. “He was organizing an event and introduced me to the program.” Inspired, Cristaldi applied in 2022 and completed his training the following year.

Bringing the Cosmos to the Public

As a NASA Solar System Ambassador, Cristaldi conducts outreach to audiences ranging from young children to adults eager to learn about space exploration.

“I love sharing the human side of space,” he says. “I tell students that no matter what field they choose, they can take inspiration from space exploration. Teamwork, accountability, and striving for excellence — those things apply to any career.”

Cristaldi has led events both in the U.S. and Brazil, where he is especially proud of giving back to his home country. On a recent visit, he worked with schools, churches, and local media to bring NASA’s message to Brazilian audiences.

“I wanted to find a way to give back to the community that shaped me,” he says. One of his most memorable events involved honoring students at his former high school who won Brazil’s National Rocketry Competition. “I reached out to NASA to see if I could recognize them, and they sent me challenge coins to present to the students. That was really special.”

His presentations often focus on current NASA missions, particularly the Artemis program and the James Webb Space Telescope.

“The moon mission is always the biggest draw,” he says. “And kids love talking about the James Webb Telescope — probably because of the stunning images they’ve seen online. It’s a great way to introduce them to the idea that what we see through these telescopes actually happened millions of years ago. It’s like looking back in time.”

Breaking Barriers and Inspiring the Next Generation

Cristaldi is also passionate about encouraging more young women to pursue careers in space.

“Unfortunately, the field is still very male-dominated,” he notes. “But I try to highlight the incredible women involved in NASA’s missions, especially those in the Artemis program. I once spoke to a young woman who loved graphic design but didn’t think she could apply it to space. I told her, ‘Of course you can! We need people to work on user experience, astronaut training materials, and mission visuals. Space needs artists too.’”

His relatable approach makes an impact. When presenting, he often chooses casual clothing over his military uniform — especially in Brazil.

“I feel like if they see me in jeans and a hoodie, they can relate more,” he explains. “It helps them see that space is for everyone.”

A Future in the Stars

As he looks ahead, Cristaldi remains open to new opportunities, including a potential transfer to the U.S. Space Force.

“Rules are always changing,” he says. “If you stay prepared, you never know what doors will open.”

No matter where his career takes him, one thing is certain: he will continue sharing his love of space.

“For me, it’s about lighting that spark in someone’s mind. I remember a 13-year-old at one of my events who asked me, ‘What’s the biggest star in the observable universe, and do you know its temperature?’ I had to admit I didn’t know, and he proudly answered, ‘I do!’ That moment was perfect — it showed me how much curiosity and passion these kids already have for space, and I just want to encourage that,” he says.

“Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation to inspire someone to dream big.”

Aerospace Physiology major Emma Costa interns with Acreage Farms, a campus-based start-up focused on sustainable agriculture through vertical farming.

Emma Costa ('26) is redefining how we approach agriculture, both on our planet and beyond. “Imagine creating your own Earth,” she says, describing her internship at start-up Acreage Farms. “You get to change the weather, the water supply and the entire environment to grow crops. It’s like being Mother Nature, adjusting conditions to meet your goals.” This hands-on, scientific approach is part of Emma’s journey as an Aerospace Physiology major at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University.

Originally from Miami, Emma arrived at Embry‑Riddle with plans to study aerospace engineering, inspired by alumni from her high school who pursued flight and engineering. “In orientation, they introduced engineering as something very computer-focused,” she recalls. “I wanted to be hands-on, and thankfully I found Aerospace Physiology.” This major offered the practical experience she craved, with labs incorporated into virtually every class.

Her passion for sustainable agriculture was sparked by a high school project involving composting, where she developed a deep appreciation for the natural processes that sustain life. “That’s really where it started for me,” she says. “I wanted to work beyond the conventional laboratory.” She also credits her green thumb to her mother, a dedicated gardener who instilled a love of nature and an understanding of how to nurture life.

Finding Balance

Balancing her commitments is no small feat. Emma juggles her research work in the Space Microbiology Lab with her internship at Acreage Farms and responsibilities as a Resident Advisor. These roles require a demanding schedule and intense time management, yet Emma embraces the challenge. Her studies in Aerospace Physiology have not only deepened her understanding of human health but also reinforced the importance of self-care. “I’m learning everything from genetics to how our muscles function,” she says. “It’s empowering to learn about the many levels of how the human body functions and what it needs to perform,” a crucial insight as she navigates her many commitments.

Emma’s willingness to learn and get involved has been key to her success. Reflecting on how she first approached Dr. Hugo Castillo, PI of the Space Microbiology Lab, she says, “I told him, I have no experience to offer, but I'm willing to clean equipment, organize anything that you guys need ... as I gain experience.”

Interning in the MicaPlex

Her determination led to working on the plant-microbial interactions project and eventually landed her the Acreage Farms internship. The company, located in the MicaPlex research park at Embry‑Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus, focuses on sustainable agriculture through vertical farming. “I'm basically a farmer,” Emma explains. “I go through all the manual processes of what it would be like without having automated technology in place to support the vertical farm.”

Hydroponic farming, as Emma describes, brings not only future applications for Mars and the Moon but also immediate benefits here on Earth. “Hydroponic vertical farming is a lot more water efficient,” she notes. “You're reusing the water supply as it travels back to the reservoir. It’s about having consistent water flow even when your environment doesn’t see rain for a month.” This research highlights hydroponics’ potential to address climate challenges and improve resource efficiency, benefiting regions facing water scarcity.

The interdisciplinary nature of her work has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her Embry‑Riddle experience. 

Her experience at a start-up has also shown her that research can flourish outside academia, providing broader career options.

Space Physics major Catherine “Cat” Walker is one of 12 Eagles awarded the 2024 Department of Defense SMART Scholarship.

Cat Walker (’26), a Space Physics student at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University, is one of 12 Eagles awarded a scholarship from the prestigious 2024 Department of Defense (DoD) Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program.

The scholarship provides full tuition coverage, mentorship, summer internships, a stipend and guaranteed post-graduate employment with the Department of Defense.

Cat is currently in her sophomore year, pursuing a degree in Space Physics with minors in Mathematics and Data Science.

Cat first learned about the DoD SMART Scholarship from a friend in Embry‑Riddle's Chi Alpa campus group. After hearing that physics majors often have a good chance of receiving the award, she decided to apply right away.

“During the application process, the Office of Awards and Fellowships was incredibly helpful when I was writing my essay for the SMART scholarship,” she said. “My professors also genuinely care about helping us gain research experience. They are committed and really want to work with us.”

Cat’s determination to pursue the SMART Scholarship led her to take on new challenges, and the support she received made a significant difference. As she worked on her application, she saw that this scholarship was more than just a financial opportunity; it was a chance to achieve her dreams in a field she enjoys — problem-solving.

“The SMART program fully pays my tuition and fees for my junior and senior years of college, including any summer courses I choose to take,” she said. “With the monthly stipend, I am comforted knowing I could leave my part-time job if classes get too hard, repay some of my student loans, pay for housing and food and even save up for after college.”

With the scholarship, Cat will complete a summer internship and is set to work full-time for the Air Force Center (AFTC) at Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) in California after graduation, where she will gain hands-on experience in a field that excites her.

“After I graduate, I’m contracted to work there for two years as a full-time employee, providing me with job security right out of school, which I’m so grateful for!”

Originally, Cat didn’t consider Embry‑Riddle until she received an email about the application process. Despite her dreams of studying mathematics abroad in the UK, she felt a strong pull toward Prescott, Arizona, after visiting the campus in person.

“I’ve found some incredible people here who have become a home away from home,” she said.

“We are a group of young adults that enjoy adventures together and make honest attempts to serve the Lord. Our mission is connection and community. Anjelysa Oleszwski is establishing a career in aviation safety by following the footsteps of both her parents at Embry‑Riddle, with a few signature moves of her own.

“I’m 20 years old, and I’m working for the federal government!” Anjelysa Oleszwski’s ('26) excitement shines through as she reflects on her recent FAA internship. It is a standout entry on a resume she will be circulating after she completes her Bachelor of Science in Aerospace and Occupational Safety from Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University in 2026.

Working within the Innovations Division of Commercial Space Transportation, she contributed to research projects, including a comprehensive comparison between FAA goals and those of COMSTAC, a space transportation advisory committee. “I knocked my manager’s socks off with that one,” she recalls, her voice brimming with pride. However, her most memorable moment was being sworn in by the FAA Administrator. “Taking the oath felt surreal, like the culmination of all my hard work.”

Anjelysa’s drive for accident investigation shapes her career ambitions, but she remains open to exploring the myriad paths in aviation safety. "I love the puzzle of accident investigation," she says. "But there are countless other ways to work in safety, and I’m eager to explore every possibility." While her ultimate goal is to serve on the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Anjelysa continues to discover opportunities as she gains experience and insight.

Her fascination with aviation safety ignited during the pandemic when her grandfather introduced her to a Smithsonian Channel show about aircraft accidents. "I was identifying the probable cause before they revealed it, and that’s when I knew this could be my career." Embry‑Riddle became the clear choice as the place she would pursue her interests in aviation safety and minor in Space Operations.

A Legacy of Eagles

Her family’s deep Embry‑Riddle legacy influenced her decision. Both of her parents are alumni. Her father, author Wes Oleszwski, created the Klyde Morris comic strip, which debuted in the student newspaper and had John Paul Riddle himself as a fan. Her mother, now a vice president in cybersecurity, and her aunt, who specializes in aircraft maintenance, are also graduates. “Having parents as alumni puts Embry‑Riddle on your radar much sooner,” she explains, adding that she hopes her younger sister will join her on the Daytona Beach Campus in 2025.

Anjelysa faced a few academic hurdles. After a challenging freshman year that led to lost scholarships, she turned to her mother for support. "She told me not to panic—she had been on academic probation too. Hearing that made a huge difference," Anjelysa shares. With renewed determination and her family’s unwavering support, she refocused her academic efforts and has since flourished.

In addition to excelling academically, Anjelysa is a dynamic presence on campus. As a member of the Orientation Team, she welcomes new students and helps them find their footing. She is also active in the International Society of Air Safety Investigators and carries on her father’s legacy at The Avion student publication as a staff designer and former managing editor.

Building a professional network has become integral to Anjelysa’s success. "I have a great alumni network thanks to my parents, but the connections I’m forging in aviation safety are entirely my own," she emphasizes. From professors to industry leaders, Anjelysa actively seeks opportunities to establish relationships that will propel her toward her career aspirations.

Her advice to future students is clear and practical: "Go to the Career Fair as a freshman. Even if they don’t hire you, they’ll remember your name when you come back as a junior or senior." She also encourages getting involved on campus and form meaningful connections. "Go have fun, make friends and meet people in your degree program. Build that network—it will pay off."

Joe Jaworski ('10, '13) never imagined that his fascination with airplanes would lead him to a groundbreaking role at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). As a flight test engineering psychologist, Jaworski is at the forefront of ensuring aviation safety through meticulous human factors analysis.

Growing up in Buffalo, New York, Jaworski’s love for planes was nurtured during late-night airport visits with his father. “My Dad worked the night shift, so time with him was precious. We would watch planes take off because that’s what I was interested in,” he recalls.

In high school, a project on future career goals steered him toward Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University, famously dubbed “The Harvard of the Sky” by Time magazine.

“I absolutely fell in love with it,” he remembers after his visit to the Daytona Beach Campus. 

An Education That Accommodates Shifting Landscapes

Jaworski initially pursued a B.S. in Air Traffic Management. He graduated in 2010 but a federal hiring freeze led him to the Master of Business Administration in Aviation Management in 2013. During his studies, he discovered a passion for human factors—a field focused on optimizing the interaction between people and systems.

“My advisor noticed my interest in working memory and air traffic controllers and redirected me to human factors. It was the perfect fit,” says Jaworski.

Today, as one of only six flight test engineering psychologists at the FAA, Jaworski’s work is crucial to aircraft certification. His role emerged in response to the Boeing 737 MAX accidents, highlighting the need for early integration of human factors in aircraft design. 

“I evaluate everything a pilot would use, look at, feel, or touch to do their job,” explains Jaworski. His assessments span from the conceptual phase to in-flight tests, ensuring ergonomic and cognitive considerations are paramount.

Research for the Next Generation of Pilots

Jaworski’s research also reconnects him with Embry‑Riddle, collaborating with Dr. Barbara Holder’s team on the FAA’s NextGen initiative.

This program aims to modernize air traffic control systems, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety and efficiency.

“Safety is the critical driver, but ergonomic factors are equally important,” he notes. From cockpit design to the strength needed to operate controls, every detail is scrutinized to accommodate pilots of all sizes and capabilities.

As aviation technology advances, Jaworski faces new challenges in balancing automation with human cognition. “It’s great some planes can basically fly themselves, but if something goes wrong, can a pilot react quickly enough?” he questions.

On test days, Jaworski dons his flight suit, immersing himself in rigorous flight briefs and in-flight evaluations. “In a Part 23 small airplane, I am right up there on the flight deck. In a Part 25 aircraft, I am in the back, monitoring,” he describes.

Helping Forge a Better Future for Aviation

Looking ahead, Jaworski is excited about the future of aviation, including eVTOL aircraft and uncrewed aerial systems. “We are working on regulations for future certification. It’s a new set of challenges when you consider these semi-autonomous or single-pilot vehicles flying over urban areas.”

Despite technological advancements, the commitment to safety remains unwavering.

“The 737 MAX incidents brought to light the importance of human factors,” he said. “Getting involved from the beginning means we don’t have to lose lives to make aviation safer. Working together, we can do the right things from the start.”

Eagle basketball star David Velasco was part of a mentorship program for student-athletes that was so valuable to his academic success that he became a mentor himself.

“The BEST program was critical for me,” says David Velasco, a former Eagles basketball standout and current Systems Engineer II at Collins Aerospace. “Balancing my academic career with playing collegiate basketball at the NCAA level was demanding. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support from my coaches, professors, teammates and lab partners.”

David Velasco’s journey from international student-athlete to mentor and aerospace professional illustrates the lasting impact of Embry‑Riddle’s Braddock Educational Success Team (BEST) program.

An International Talent on the Court

Originally from Spain, David’s passion for both basketball and aerospace engineering led him to Embry‑Riddle, where he made an immediate impact as a guard for the Eagles. Known for his sharp shooting and defensive tenacity, David was a vital player in the Eagles’ performance in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC), contributing both on and off the court. His leadership earned him multiple spots on the SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award.

David’s basketball success was matched by his academic achievements. In 2022, he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering, focusing on propulsion and aerodynamics. In 2023, he earned a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering with distinction.

From Player to Tutor to Graduate Coordinator

David’s introduction to the BEST program came early in his university career. “At the beginning of my Embry‑Riddle career, I was on the basketball team, and I joined the tutoring program basically as a student,” David recalls. “One of my teammates was my tutor, and I got to meet all the other tutors.” This experience was pivotal in his development both as a student-athlete and a future mentor.

As he progressed academically, David moved from being a mentee to becoming a mentor himself. He became a tutor within the BEST program and eventually rose to the role of graduate coordinator, where he led a team of 12 study-mentors and provided tutoring to over 450 student-athletes. “I got to see all the aspects of the program and how it truly helps people,” David says. “Going from being one of the students and attending the program regularly for help to becoming the graduate coordinator was a rewarding experience.”

For David, the personal connections formed through mentoring were the most important part.

As a tutor, David challenged his peers to think critically. “I didn’t just give answers. I liked getting students to reason through problems and consider what they were working on from a different perspective,” he explains.

A Future Built on Mentorship

Today, David applies the lessons learned from the BEST program in his role at Collins Aerospace, where he is part of the Head-up Guidance Systems division. The discipline, time management and leadership skills he developed at Embry‑Riddle continue to serve him well in his professional life. “The relationships and skills I gained at Embry‑Riddle have stayed with me through every challenge I’ve faced in my career,” he reflects.

David’s success, both academically and professionally, is a testament to the enduring impact of the BEST program. “The BEST program didn’t just teach discipline and time management — it instilled resilience and a strong sense of purpose,” David says. His achievements prove that the support provided by BEST extends far beyond the university, empowering students to become leaders in their fields.

From snowboarding championships in her hometown of El Dorado Hills, California, to leading her team and peers at Embry‑Riddle, Kelly has always pushed the limits of what she can achieve. But it’s in the air — or preparing others for it — where her ambition truly takes flight.

Serving as a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) has further fueled her desire to improve safety standards for pilots. Through her research, Kelly is driving changes that could influence future FAA training protocols and certification standards. “This project has shown me the real-world impact safety research can have — not just in theory but in practical applications I bring directly to my flight students.”

One of the most urgent challenges in aviation today is loss of control (LOC), a leading cause of fatal crashes in both commercial and private sectors. Human factors like distraction, fatigue and insufficient training contribute to nearly half of all aviation fatalities globally. Addressing these factors is essential for reducing accidents and improving safety.

Kelly’s work on LOC incidents goes far beyond textbook lessons. Collaborating with principal investigators Brian Roggow and Dr. Esmaeil Zarei, Kelly identifies human errors that lead to catastrophic events. By applying tools like the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) and Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBN), her team is developing predictive models that could reshape pilot training and safety protocols across the industry.

“The research I’m involved in, supported by the Boeing Center for Aviation Safety, gives me the tools to turn hard data into real-world lessons,” Kelly explains. “In aviation, some mistakes can only be made once, so learning from others is critical.”

Field Work Matters Too

In 2023, Kelly secured an internship with Delta Air Lines, where she didn’t just observe — she contributed to operations and safety initiatives. This hands-on experience, combined with her research, has given her a deep understanding of aviation that extends far beyond theoretical knowledge. As a competitor in the Women’s Air Race Classic, Kelly has also proven that she thrives under pressure, whether in the air or on the ground.

Getting Ahead Collaboratively

Her leadership doesn’t stop in the lab or classroom. As president of Athletes in Aviation, Kelly helps other student-athletes navigate their careers in aerospace. In her role as Industry Liaison Officer for the ALPA ACE Club, she connects students with aviation professionals, ensuring they build their industry networks long before graduation.

She appreciates the experiences that have taken her beyond the classroom.

How can there still be so much to learn about a force as timeless and elemental as fire? It turns out there is quite a lot still to discover.

Scientists like Brittany Brown ('17, '20) study fire dynamics and behavior, forensic investigation, suppression and management, the impact of climate change and fire ecology, such as ecosystem recovery and human factors, including education, prevention, urban planning and public safety.

This range of considerations is daunting, and Brown has been involved in almost every facet of fire science. She continues to build a career on understanding and mitigating risks, which led to her current role as chief of fire prevention in South Adams County, Colorado. The county is the fifth largest in the state, with about 500,000 residents.

She launched her career as a mechanic in the United States Air Force.

“I loved fixing things, and I loved flying. While I was in the Air Force, I fixed C-130s, and being a crew chief meant learning all systems — communications, navigation, propulsion, radar. You get to know the airplane really well,” she recalls.

Advancement Through Education

This deep mechanical knowledge led her to pursue multiple degrees at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University, including a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Maintenance focused on management and aviation safety, followed by a Master's in Systems Engineering. She brought these perspectives together to investigate aircraft accidents, which then led to her interest in fire science.

“I was looking to specialize in survivability and crashworthiness, which has a lot to do with fire. However, I quickly realized that not enough airplanes catch fire to get a good grasp of how fire works.”

Her curiosity and dedication to understanding fire behavior propelled her into a career in fire safety, spanning firefighting, administrative positions and investigative work. She has a particular passion for forensic fire investigation, which led her to earn a doctorate in forensics from Oklahoma State University this year. The degree is technically designated “AEFTI” — arson, explosives, firearms and tool marks.

“We're always trying to figure out the root cause: How did this happen?” she emphasizes, reflecting the scientific rigor she brings to her work. “You need to figure out where your fire started. My first several years in the fire service, I was a fire investigator. That's why my Ph.D. is in forensics. We do a lot of post-mishap investigation analysis.”

A Career as Chief of Fire Prevention

Today, Brown oversees a fire prevention bureau, where her role encompasses development review, code compliance, public education and fire investigations. She ensures that new buildings meet stringent fire safety standards and educates the public on fire risks and prevention.

“Most people never think a fire will happen to them,” she notes. “They don't understand that something as simple as plugging too many things into an extension cord can cause a fire or know that smoke alarms double your chance of surviving a home fire. Awareness is crucial.”

Her efforts also extend to large-scale advocacy. Recently, she was in Washington, D.C., advocating on Capitol Hill for better fire safety measures and policies. “I love addressing public policy on a national level,” she says. “Here’s what we can do, here’s what we can fix. It's all about education. No one knows what they don't know until it becomes relevant to them.”

Looking to the future, Brown hopes to one day influence national standards and protect both firefighters and the public through innovative research and policy advocacy.

“I love research. This is a problem. Here’s how we fix it. And then I love pushing that agenda and getting buy-in. My work is all about protecting firefighters, protecting citizens and being on that cutting edge.”

The impact of climate change is a growing area of exploration. Brown notes, “Climate change may be increasing wildfire risks due to higher temperatures and atmospheric shifts, but much more research is needed to understand its full impact and then apply what we learn.”

In a career marked by an ongoing pursuit of knowledge and a deep commitment to safety, Brown has become a respected figure in the fire science community. Her work ensures that communities are not only better prepared to handle fire-related incidents but also that such incidents are less likely to occur in the first place.

Does she immediately assess the fire safety of any building she walks into? She admits she does. And it’s not a bad habit for the rest of us to adopt.

That privileged perspective has fueled her passion for aviation and brought Serena to the B.S. in Aeronautical Science program at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott Campus.

“It's seeing the world from a different view,” said Serena, a native of Vancouver, Washington, just north of Portland, Oregon. “We're stuck with this ground perspective where we're looking up at everything. When you fly, you look down and see everything differently. It's just amazing.”

From Piloting to Pageants

Although she is absorbed in her flight training and the demands of challenging coursework at one of the world’s top universities, Serena is committed to competing in the Miss Arizona 2024 USA competition through Miss America as the reigning Miss Desert Willow.

“In my freshman year of high school, I started competing in the Miss America organization through my local pageant back home,” Serena said. “Although I didn’t win, I made incredible friends, and I started gaining lifelong skills such as how to do interviews, how to write resumes and how to apply for scholarships. And I just had the best time going out there and building my confidence.”

That confidence, to say nothing of the scholarships she’s earned, helps Serena thrive as a flight student at Embry‑Riddle even though she’s more than 1,200 miles from home.

“Obviously, it's hard; it takes a lot of dedication, a lot of sweat, a lot of tears,” she said. “But here, we're being trained by some of the best pilots to become the best pilots. That’s something I am so grateful for.”

Serena started flying in her senior year at Columbia River High School at a Part 61 operation based at Pearson Field Airport, right next to the river, training in Cessna 150s and 152s with basic “six-pack” instrument panels.

“It's Echo airspace inside of Charlie airspace, which is really fun to fly,” she said. “And flying in the Pacific Northwest is so beautiful.”

In fact, among her final flights before resuming her flight training at Embry‑Riddle was with her instructor on a sightseeing tour over Mount St. Helens.

“It was just so crazy and so cool to fly right at the top of this mountain and see it that way,” Serena said. “It was beautiful.”

As she was building her hours and skills as an aviator, Serena also did a dual enrollment program and earned an associate in arts degree, which allowed her to start sophomore classes when she arrived at Embry‑Riddle for the Fall 2023 term.

A Different Kind of Runway

She participated in several pageants throughout high school and earned almost $5,000 in scholarships, with the high point coming in the Miss Washington’s Teen contest.

“I placed in the Top 10 and I won top Interview out of all 25 candidates and also in the preliminary evening gown [category],” she said. “I was so grateful for that, and I think it really showed off the hard work that I've put in. I actually thought I was going to be done competing after that.”

But then Serena connected with Electrical Engineering major Molly Ruley, who was Miss Yavapai County in 2023 and also competed in the Miss Arizona pageant.

“I wasn’t sure, but she kept saying, ‘do it, it will be fun!’” Serena recalled. “She convinced me, and the event was held here on campus, so I could literally walk there from my dorm.”

It turned out to be a worthwhile walk. Serena earned the Miss Desert Willow 2024 crown, which came with $10,000 in scholarship money and allowed her to “make some great friends” from all across Arizona.

Another benefit was continuing to raise awareness for Serena’s community service initiative to help support Helping Hands 4 Humanity, which strives to improve the lives of needy or underprivileged children and families by providing them with materials and assistance to improve their access to education.

“I'm very glad I decided to do it,” she said. “I think the world works out how it's supposed to.”

Why Earn an Aeronautical Science Degree from Embry‑Riddle?

And no matter how the upcoming Miss Arizona competition works out, Serena is also very glad she chose Embry‑Riddle.

“It had so much more to offer me than any other school,” she said. “We're able to network with companies that we want to work with and make those connections. Those are things that other colleges couldn't promise me.”

So far, Serena says, the school has lived up to its promise. One of her favorite events was the Career Fair in October, where she ended up among five finalists for a coveted internship at Alaska Airlines.

“I didn’t get it, but that's OK,” she said. “I still have next year and the year after that, and I was also able to connect with some female pilots from United Airlines who were available to mentor me and prepare me to go to United if that's where I choose to work. And it’s those networking connections that we get while we're at the school that are so important.”

Beyond the thrill of flying brand new Cessna 172 G1000s—quite a leap from Cessna 152s with steam gauges—Serena has also been inspired by the encouragement of her student pilot peers and the quality of instruction, particularly from Assistant Professor of Aeronautical Science Ed Ray Stevens, a former United Airlines pilot who teaches Crew Resource Management.

“He gives us these real things that he’s experienced, or his friends have experienced, and we get to learn about them and what we would do in those situations,” she said. “He just really inspires me overall and gets me excited to go to the airlines. And I think that's what the professors here really do to prepare us for our futures.”

Networking Connections That Count for Tomorrow

As she looks toward her next horizon, Serena has a single goal in mind.

“I want to be a captain for an airline,” she said. “I’m not 100% sure which one yet, but I'll be grateful for any opportunity that's given to me.”

While she isn’t certain where she wants to fly, Serena is certain she will be prepared and have plenty of opportunities to choose from.

“Embry‑Riddle has set me up to apply for those airlines that I think are best suited for me and also given me the exposure to airlines that I wouldn't have considered before,” she said. “They're able to get me direct connections with recruiters and with airline programs like United Aviate and many others. That's something that not every school can give me. And that's another reason why I chose Embry Riddle.”

In the continually growing fields of aeronautics and aviation, some would say that the industry chooses you before you even know it. For Associate Professor of the Practice Dr. Linda Vee Weiland, the aviation industry claimed her heart from day one when she was nearly born on an Eastern Airlines flight between Detroit and Fort Lauderdale and was then named after the pilot's wife.

“I have loved aviation my entire life,” Weiland shared while discussing how she entered the industry. “I decided that being an air traffic controller (ATC) in the Navy would be a way to be in aviation, get a college education and see the world.” 

Weiland joined Embry‑Riddle as a professor in 1994 after 26 years of service in the U.S. Navy and six more years as a Liaison Engineer for a major airline. “When I think of the industry, I don’t just think of air traffic control,” Weiland replied when asked what inspires her about the field. “Controllers are just one piece of the aviation industry that involves many occupations and systems. My inspiration comes from having the seminal experience of almost being born on a plane and having great mentors and role models.” 

What is air traffic control? 

"Air traffic control is part of aeronautics and aviation at a global level. It is exciting, mainly fast-paced and never boring,” said Weiland while speaking of the industry in which she has decades of experience. 

"An air traffic controller’s main job is to move aircraft safely and expeditiously in many environments. With the future of new technology in the airspace, it will continue to be a global environment that is exciting and fun.” 

Where do air traffic graduates work?

“The outlook is very bright to become an air traffic controller [...], and there is such an anticipated prediction of growth in the industry for travel and the movement of cargo along with new entrants to the airspace that one should watch for new opportunities along with the traditional ones for ATC.” 

Some of the top employers' students in the Air Traffic program find careers with include the U.S. military, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Department of Defense.

How do you get into the air traffic control industry?

Embry‑Riddle's Daytona Beach and Prescott campuses offer a bachelor's degree in Air Traffic Management, providing students with practical application courses and simulation and lab experience. This exposure to facilities, industry-experienced professors and hands-on learning opportunities gives students a solid foundation to enter air traffic careers. 

Both residential campuses include the Approved Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration, providing students with not only the basics of air traffic but hands-on high-fidelity air traffic control simulators in the Tower and The Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) labs. Graduates are provided the CTI Endorsement upon graduation, which enables them to apply under a separate hiring pool for air traffic control. 

If you’re looking to add air traffic expertise on top of another degree, Weiland recommends “taking the Minor in Air Traffic Management... which focuses on air traffic management and operational concepts, providing students with an understanding of the industry while emphasizing its global applications.”

The Air Traffic Management minor offered through Embry‑Riddle's Worldwide Campus also offers course credit for air traffic controllers in military service. Additionally, to be an FAA controller, the FAA requires three years of work experience and/or a bachelor’s degree. Weiland also recommends to those looking to have an aviation-related career that “students should look at the industry to find role models and mentors. Specifically, to get into air traffic control or management, students should look for an organization to join.” 

What are the benefits of being in the industry?

“First, it is a very robust and exciting industry,” Weiland shared while discussing the highs of working in the air traffic industry. “The FAA will train you! There are also many positions in training and other areas of air traffic management that are not specifically the controller on the position.” 

In addition to the wide range of positions this industry offers, Weiland spoke on benefits for controllers on the job, from stable benefits packages through government employers to full-time position offers. 

“Controllers work full-time with rotating shifts and may have some additional work hours; however, they usually work in good facilities. [...] Air traffic control is a 24/7, 365-day job that demands flexibility.” 

Have you seen any challenges in the industry? 

One of the biggest challenges in the air traffic industry is flexibility. “If you are not flexible about work hours and the fact that each day can be entirely different from the day before or the day after, air traffic might not be the best fit,” Weiland provided. 

There are a few other challenges in the industry, such as growing demands for travel and extreme weather shifts that can happen quickly. Industry challenges, such as the current shortage of air traffic controllers, can be a benefit for students looking to enter the industry following graduation. 

Any advice for students considering joining the field? 

As the need for air traffic controllers continues to rise across the U.S., interest in the industry has increased. Trying out introductory classes or researching the field can help students decide if a major in Air Traffic Management is the best career path for their future.  

Students within the program would also benefit from role models and mentors, rising in rank in industry and getting acquainted with organizations that promote air traffic control, such as the FAA, the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. military. “There is so much information at your fingertips,” Weiland shares. “Go on the web and research the occupation.” See if you can see yourself in the field of air traffic control.

Until she was actually accepted at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University, it never occurred to Coral Scotland (’24) that she would follow her father’s academic journey at the world’s leading aviation and aerospace educator.

Her acceptance to Embry‑Riddle came just days before her father’s passing in 2020, and while Coral was ready to make her late father proud, the cost of college loomed large for a family that had just suffered a grievous loss.

That’s where The Boeing Company came in.

Coral was chosen as part of the 2020 cohort of Boeing Scholars, the second ever at Embry‑Riddle, and the award helped cover many of the expenses that otherwise might have stopped her education before it started.

Each fall, Boeing awards a select group of outstanding freshmen scholarships of $5,000 to $7,500 yearly for two years as they begin degree programs at Embry‑Riddle. The scholarships are supported by a $3 million endowment from the world’s largest aerospace company and leading aircraft manufacturer and include exclusive tours of Boeing facilities and networking opportunities with key company leaders.

“This significantly alleviated my out-of-pocket costs and seemed to be a direct sign from God that I needed to pursue my higher education at Embry‑Riddle,” Coral said.

As she prepares to graduate with her B.S. in Aviation Business Administration from the Daytona Beach Campus, Coral took time to reflect on her Embry‑Riddle experience, the support she got from Boeing and her quest to make her dad and mom proud.

Tell us about your background

I was born in Pembroke Pines, Florida, but I call Antigua, a very small island in the Caribbean, my home. My parents are immigrants; they grew up in poverty and worked extremely hard to build a better life here for their family.

I grew up with one older and two younger sisters, and I had an amazing childhood filled with nothing but memories of happiness. We’re a Christian family, so church has also always been a safe space for me.

How did you first get interested in aviation?

My interest is because of my father, Embry‑Riddle alumnus Robert F. J. Scotland (’92). He was a plane connoisseur who worked as a jet engine salesman, which allowed him to travel the world and talk about planes (what more could a lover of the sky ask for, right?).

My family and I lived about 20 minutes from North Perry Airport in South Florida, and my dad could tell the different types of planes just by their SOUND alone. He never ceased to amaze me with his vast knowledge of airplanes, the way they worked, the math, the physics, the engineering and even the weather.

My father would also take me on practice flights while working toward his private pilot’s license. I was giddy to get into a plane with my father as the pilot in command. He used to say he wanted his children to get pilot’s licenses more than he wanted them to get driver’s licenses.

So, in the months before my 16^th birthday, my father began preparing me for my own flight lessons. I got handed down his expensive headphones and all his flight equipment, even his slightly banged-up flight bag and fuel sump.

If I have one regret in life, it is not finishing my private pilot program. After my father’s passing in 2020, I found it nearly impossible to fly without crying or thinking of him. I always remember him talking about the day we could fly, just him and I, in a Cessna, wherever we wanted, whenever we wanted. Despite having three other daughters, I was the only one who shared his immense love for flying.

My father never got to see me fly solo, and that pains me a lot. I still hope to honor my father’s wishes one day and earn my private license because he is the reason I love aviation.

Why did you choose Embry‑Riddle for college?

My dad. I had no intention of attending university, and even though I had started several college applications to satisfy my mom, I never completed them. I remember being with my dad in his hospital room one day, and he randomly asked if I had applied to Embry‑Riddle yet.

When I said no, he made me apply on my laptop right there, and he never had a doubt that I would be accepted. Although I had done well in school, I never thought about going to college, let alone at a prestigious private aeronautical institution.

He watched over my shoulder as I filled out my application from start to finish and saw me hit “submit.” When I told him shortly before he passed away that I had been accepted, he simply nodded and said, “Good.”

How did you feel about being selected as a Boeing Scholar?

I felt undeserving at first. In my eyes, I hadn’t done anything particularly special to merit earning a scholarship from a company as renowned as Boeing.

But it was crystal clear this was all part of God’s divine plan for me. I was elated to be accepted to this prestigious university, but I knew I could not afford it.

I was proud to be one of nine Boeing Scholars for the entire university. At the time, though, I did not understand the magnitude or benefits of the award. I had no idea just how much more was to come my way from being part of this exclusive group. All in all, I was just grateful to God for being chosen.

How has being a Boeing Scholar shaped your Embry‑Riddle experience so far?

Having the title of Boeing Scholar has let me know that I am qualified to be here and that I can do this. Boeing believed in me before I even believed in myself.

Like Embry‑Riddle’s reputation precedes me, so does my title as a Boeing Scholar. It has opened doors that I didn’t even know existed, such as being invited to networking events with Boeing executives and going on field trips to Boeing facilities.

This summer, I will be starting an on-campus internship with Boeing, and I know being a Boeing Scholar gave me a foot in the door. I am part of the Engineering Developmental Program as a Supply Chain intern, and being a Boeing Scholar has also made me more confident in who I am and where I have the potential to go.

What is your favorite memory about being part of the Boeing Scholar program?

My all-time favorite memory was the opportunity to visit the 787 Dreamliner facility in Charleston, South Carolina, which was the experience of a lifetime. Because when else would I have the opportunity for an exclusive, in-depth tour of a facility like this? When would I have had the time, money or resources to meet the people I met that day?

It was my favorite not just because of its exclusivity but because it completely revolutionized what I wanted to do in the future.

I had been an Aerospace Engineering major my first two years at Embry‑Riddle, and I never felt quite right. Although I was capable of the work, I never found enjoyment or fulfillment in my classes like I did in high school. I couldn’t relate to any of my peers on a social level, and I was struggling to feel like I fit in at Embry‑Riddle, especially as a black female.

In December 2021, I had gone on my first trip to visit Boeing’s Cape Canaveral site. A central part of the visit included one-on-one meetings with top engineers and the head of the facility. Unfortunately, I did NOT enjoy the trip. In fact, it made me feel even more alienated from my colleagues and potential future coworkers, who never seemed to have any doubts about what they were doing.

I was struggling. After the trip, I found myself failing classes and wanting to drop out of college completely. Ultimately, I found the courage to do what was best for me, and I switched my major to Aviation Business Administration. Although I faced some heavy scrutiny from family members and close friends, I knew in my heart that all my dad ever wanted was for me to be happy.

So, I pushed forward.

In Fall 2022, when I made my trip to the Dreamliner facility, I went as a business major instead of an engineer. It allowed me to look at Boeing with a fresh set of eyes. Our tour guides were wonderful Boeing employees whom I could relate to and talk to far more easily than anyone I had met previously.

The second trip showed me that I didn’t have to force myself to fit into a box to be an asset. I had skills and talents that people don’t normally appreciate or recognize, and I had found my calling at Boeing.

What is your ultimate career goal, and how is Embry‑Riddle helping you reach it?

While my ultimate goal is to be a wife and a mother, I am now working toward a career as a part of Boeing Global Services, conducting outreach to communities and local schools and honestly just engaging with the people side of Boeing.

While I truly believe my purpose in life is to create and care for a family of my own, Embry‑Riddle has given me the opportunity to grow academically and professionally. It has provided the resources and support to explore all the world has to offer me. I know I have the capacity to do wonders in the corporate world, and soon, I’ll have the degree to prove it!

What would you say to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?

Allow yourself the chance to change your mind, to grow and to step outside of what everyone else expects from you.

As a people pleaser, all I ever wanted to do was what everyone wanted me to do, but I was so unhappy. I was scared to change my mind about the degree I wanted because I did not want people to think less of me for going from engineering to business.

I think you must be open to the idea that it’s okay to start over from scratch sometimes and to have the resilience to do what feels right for you. Remember, it took me two years to gain the courage to do what made me truly happy.

Anything else you would like to add?

I want to dedicate my experience as a Boeing Scholar at Embry‑Riddle to my father, Robert, and my mother, Dr. Dion Phillips-Scotland.  

I know I talked a lot about my dad as an inspiration, but without a female role model as empathetic, intelligent, diligent and devout as my mother, I would have never made it this far.

My mom answered every call when I felt like dropping out, calmed every nerve when I was scared I wouldn’t succeed and reminded me that I was loved—unconditionally. She is my rock.

I can never thank my parents enough for the foundation they built and the life they created for me. I am privileged and blessed beyond words. Knowing that they grew up impoverished but were able to build a life where they could send me to flight training and then to a private university, all while caring for their other three daughters as well … I can’t explain how much everything I’ve done is to honor my parents.”

Makenzi Patterson (’25) grew up in Avondale, Arizona, a western suburb of Phoenix, with a growing curiosity and passion for the science realm. 

“I always enjoyed watching “NCIS,” Bones” and “Forensic Files,” so I took a forensic science class my junior year of high school and loved it,” she shared. “I love how fascinated I feel when learning about the techniques and really knowing how to do something that most people don’t know how to do... I love how impactful forensic science is to the community.” 

Her fascination and growing interest in the forensic field led her to start her journey at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University and pursue a B.S. in Forensic Biology. 

The Embry‑Riddle Advantage 

Patterson discovered Embry‑Riddle when a representative visited her high school to showcase the Forensic Biology program. The presentation left a lasting impression on her, as she realized that pursuing her passion and interests in the forensic field could be achieved through Embry‑Riddle. 

“I chose Embry‑Riddle because I loved the location, and the small class sizes allow me to excel academically,” she said. “As soon as I came on my visit to the school, I knew it was going to be the perfect fit!” 

Patterson not only benefits from its convenient location and the class sizes, but she also takes advantage of state-of-the-art labs and enjoys direct connections to expert industry-leading faculty. 

“There is a very good student-to-professor relationship, where the professors are willing to help students succeed and tailor their lectures to their students’ needs... I also like that each of my professors has industry experience,” she expressed. “I have had great experiences, like touring the Phoenix Crime Lab, listening to amazing stories told by my professors that help apply what we are learning in lectures to real-life situations and more.” 

Finding the Right Program 

The Forensic Biology program is designed for students, like Patterson, who are interested in biology, chemistry and law — giving students the skills and background needed by professionals in forensic science laboratories, law enforcement and other related fields.  

“My favorite part of the program is the lab experience. The access to high-tech instruments and real lab procedures used in forensic laboratories is preparing me for when I attend an internship and join the workforce,” she said. “It’s extremely rewarding to learn proper lab techniques on such high-tech instruments because I will be able to show up to an internship or job already knowing how they work and what not to do!” 

In addition to receiving lab experience, Patterson said one of her greatest academic accomplishments was being offered a teacher’s assistant (TA) position for Dr. Hillary Eaton, the Program Chair of Forensic Biology. 

“I feel honored that Dr. Eaton not only sees my potential academically, but also notices my hard work and trusts me with all the responsibilities of being a TA,” she continued. “Honestly, my whole college experience is such a big achievement, and I’m proud of how well I am doing. I shock myself at the end of every semester when I realize I got through it and continue to make the Dean’s List.”

On-Campus Involvement 

Since stepping foot on the Prescott Campus, Patterson has gotten involved and dedicates much of her time toward several clubs and organizations, including the Pre-Health Sciences Club, Women's Ambassador Association and the International Forensic Honors Society, Chapter Beta Eta. She shared, “I like being involved in clubs that encourage good academic integrity but are also an outlet to have fun and do activities outside of school.”

The Women’s Ambassador Association aims to encourage the empowerment of women both on campus and in nearby schools. Patterson explained that they focus heavily on promoting women in STEM fields and engage in outreach programs in middle and elementary schools.

“We introduce scientific activities to kids, and we put on lots of fun events on campus... One of our biggest and most impactful events is Shadow Day, in which we take incoming students with our same major around campus and to our classes for the day,” she said. “It really helps the incoming students get a good feel for what an everyday Embry‑Riddle experience is like.” 

Additionally, Patterson serves as the president of The International Forensic Society, Chapter Beta Eta, in which she works to fulfill the mission that’s dedicated to supporting academic achievement, promoting community understanding and advancing the field of forensic science. 

“The International Forensic Honor Society, Chapter Beta Eta, is newer to the Prescott Campus but is beginning to flourish! During meetings, we engage in fun forensic activities, like solving a crime involving all aspects of the forensic field, including forensic biology, forensic psychology and forensic accounting,” she explained. “We also organize fundraisers on campus by raising money for different charities... During National Native American Heritage Month, we held a fundraiser to help Native Hope, in which they raise money to find and identify murdered and missing indigenous women.” 

Patterson’s dedication to on-campus involvement continues to grow her passion for the forensic field while opening doors to new industry opportunities.  

She shared, “This February, I will be joining the other officers of the International Forensic Honors Society at the American Academy of Forensic Science Conference in Denver, Colorado. Forensic scientists from all over the country will be attending, giving speeches and recruiting interns... It’s such a great opportunity that I’m looking forward to.” 

Inspiration and Motivation 

When asked about what advice she gives to new and current students trying to find their way at Embry‑Riddle, Patterson has some insight to offer.  

“Do not compare yourself or your journey to anyone else’s... Comparison can really hold people back from reaching their full potential, so acknowledge what you need to succeed academically and do just that!” 

As for her motivation to continue her journey in the industry, Patterson spoke about wanting to make a lasting impact in the forensic community and beyond.
