Aric J. Raus, Ph.D., CPsychol, FRAeS, is an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle whose research focuses on the intersection of mental health, human performance, organizational culture and aviation safety. His work examines how psychological well-being influences operational decision-making and safety outcomes across the aviation industry.
A retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, Raus has more than 30 years of civilian and military aviation experience. He led aviation units in combat and peacekeeping operations while serving as a UH-60 Black Hawk pilot-in-command and maintenance test pilot. His flight experience ranges from the Piper J-3 Cub to the UH-60M Black Hawk and informs his research on practical, system-level approaches to aviation safety.
Raus leads the development of the Accident Investigation Mental Health Job Aid, an international research initiative designed to help investigators identify mental health and human performance factors associated with aviation incidents. He also collaborates with the U.S. Air Force Aircrew Brain and Mental Health Research Program and contributes to aviation safety and human factors initiatives through the Aerospace Medical Association Mental Health Committee, University Aviation Association Mental Health Committee, European Association for Aviation Psychology and Aerospace Human Factors Association.
His research seeks to better integrate mental health into aviation safety systems, strengthen organizational approaches to psychological well-being and normalize appropriate help-seeking among aviation professionals.
In addition to his work at Embry-Riddle, Raus serves as president-elect of the Aerospace Human Factors Association, a group commander with the Civil Air Patrol and a member of the U.S. Department of State Board of Examiners.
Raus is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society. He is also a recipient of the Order of Saint Michael from the Army Aviation Association of America.
