Nayome Valerio, president of the Student Government Association at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Asia Campus in Singapore, traveled more than 10,000 miles to celebrate the university’s 100th anniversary.
Though nearly halfway around the world at the Daytona Beach Campus, she felt supported, from the welcome she received by Worldwide staff at the Orlando airport to touring the residential campus, observing the Flight Line and joining her fellow Eagles in centennial festivities. Valeria, who is from the Philippines and is a senior pursuing a degree in Aeronautics with a minor in Aircraft Maintenance Operations, credited the people with providing such warmth that she felt at home, she said.
Now back to her studies at the Asia Campus, Valerio reflected on some of the memorable moments from her experience.
What was the purpose of your trip?
I came to present to the Board of Trustees on the Student Government Association’s efforts and wins in building student life at Embry-Riddle Asia.
Whom did you connect with most during your visit?
I connected with the other Student Government Association presidents: Jacob (Pritchard), Michael (Mercer), and Ander (Trueno Garcia). They were so candid about their challenges and successes that it made me feel comfortable opening up about my own experiences. There's something special about talking to people who just get it.
What were some of your favorite experiences on campus?
I went on a flight with a student pilot working toward his (Certified Flight Instructor) license, which gave me a stunning aerial view of Daytona Beach. I also got to take in the centennial celebration drone show, which was truly spectacular.
How was your experience at the centennial gala?
It was inspiring. I had rich conversations with people who have spent decades in the industry, and their advice on building a long, meaningful career stuck with me. Seeing the Singapore live stream come up on screen made it feel personal.
How did this experience help your career aspirations?
Sitting in on the Board of Trustees meeting opened my eyes to the breadth of career paths available in aviation, and spending the week with industry leaders reinforced that being an Eagle can genuinely take you anywhere. It reaffirmed my passion for the industry and reminded me that I still have so much runway ahead.
