Dr. Angelynn Álvarez is a tenure-track assistant professor of Mathematics at Embry-Riddle. She graduated with a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Houston in Houston, TX. Her research interests lie in algebraic coding theory, error-correcting codes, information theory, differential geometry and algebraic geometry. She is also interested in the connections between classical coding theory and quantum information theory, namely quantum error-correcting codes.
Dr. Álvarez has been teaching full-time at the university-level since 2016, and has taught a wide range of undergraduate mathematics courses ranging from foundational mathematics, to mathematics for K-12 teachers and to upper-division courses for mathematics, engineering, and science majors. She is passionate about mathematics education, innovative pedagogy and creating engaging learning environments through active learning, growth mindset practices and student-centered teaching approaches that encourage persistence, collaboration and confidence in mathematics.
She views herself as a "lifelong learner" who is continually exploring new ideas in mathematics, teaching and in her non-academic interests such as yoga, hiking and weightlifting.
She earned her (Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Houston under the guidance of Dr. Gordon Heier after completing a doctoral dissertation in the field of complex differential geometry, where her Ph.D. thesis was titled, "On the positive holomorphic sectional curvature of projectivized vector bundles over compact complex manifolds". She also holds an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Houston. Prior to graduate school, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of Houston with a B.A. in Mathematics and a minor in Spanish.
Ph.D. - Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics, University of Houston
