David  Canales Garcia

Overview

Dr. David Canales Garcia is an assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and serves as the university's representative to the Universities Space Research Association (USRA).

He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Spain and an M.S. in Astrophysics, Particle Physics and Cosmology from the University of Barcelona. Prior to pursuing doctoral studies, he worked as a space technology engineer with Satlantis LLC, where he contributed to the development of Earth-observation cameras for microsatellites. He later earned a Ph.D. in Astrodynamics and Space Applications from Purdue University under the supervision of Dr. Kathleen C. Howell within the Multi-Body Dynamics Research Group.

Dr. Canales Garcia's research focuses on astrodynamics in multi-body environments, AI-enabled image processing, predictive control, cislunar mission design, autonomous satellite operations, space weather and space policy. His work is supported by organizations including NASA, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Space Force.

Recognized for his leadership potential in space science and policy, Dr. Canales Garcia was selected for both the NASA PI Launchpad program and the Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Fellowship. Through his research and professional service, he is advancing technologies and strategies that support the future of space exploration and operations.
