Doreen M. McGunagle

Overview

Dr. Doreen McGunagle, Ph.D., FRGS, is a subject matter expert in corporate and international strategy and serves as a faculty member in the College of Business at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Worldwide Campus. She teaches business foundations, international business, and strategy courses, helping students develop the analytical, strategic, and leadership capabilities required to navigate an increasingly complex global economy.

Dr. McGunagle holds a Ph.D. in Organization and Management with a specialization in International Business and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS). This distinction complements her interdisciplinary interests in global systems, sustainability, environmental resilience, conservation, and place-based field research. Before joining Embry-Riddle, she consulted with and advised organizations on corporate strategy, organizational culture, and strategic planning. Her extensive experience in business consulting and academia informs a practical, research-driven approach to teaching, scholarship, and mentorship.

Her research and scholarly interests center on corporate strategy, sustainability, organizational resilience, and the relationship between environmental change and long-term organizational performance. Her work examines how organizations integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into strategic decision-making and how sustainability initiatives can contribute to operational resilience, competitive advantage, and long-term value creation. She is particularly interested in how organizations operating across international markets respond to environmental pressures, changing regulatory landscapes, resource constraints, and evolving stakeholder expectations.

Increasingly, Dr. McGunagle’s scholarship extends beyond traditional business research to examine sustainability through interdisciplinary fieldwork, conservation photography, documentary storytelling, and public scholarship. This work explores how environmental systems, communities, institutions, and organizations respond to ecological pressures and how visual evidence can strengthen understanding of sustainability, resilience, and responsible decision-making.

She is the author of the forthcoming book (2027), Edges of Performance: A Global Journey Through Earth’s Most Fragile Ecosystems, part of a long-term interdisciplinary research and documentary initiative examining ecosystems operating under increasing environmental pressure. Through field research, photography, documentary production, and written scholarship, Edges of Performance investigates environmental change, adaptation, conservation practices, and the interconnected relationships among ecological systems, communities, institutions, and economic activity. The project translates complex sustainability challenges into accessible, evidence-based narratives that connect environmental resilience with broader questions of organizational and societal performance.

Dr. McGunagle’s conservation work also includes (2026) Parks & Preservation, a project exploring the importance of America’s national and state parks as environmental, cultural, and educational resources. By documenting protected landscapes and ecosystems, the project examines conservation, environmental stewardship, sustainability, and the long-term importance of preserving natural resources for future generations.

Dr. McGunagle is also the Founder of Global Voices for Nature Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization advancing conservation awareness, environmental education, and public engagement through photography, research, and visual storytelling. The foundation complements her academic work by translating sustainability and environmental stewardship into educational initiatives that connect research with real-world conservation challenges.

Her broader scholarship and public engagement include published work addressing sustainability and environmental change, including coverage of sustainability initiatives in France and environmental pressures affecting France’s Camargue. She has also presented on the sustainability of the natural environment and pursued research examining corporate resilience, further connecting her interests in organizational strategy with the growing challenges organizations and societies face from environmental and economic disruption.

These interdisciplinary activities complement Dr. McGunagle’s commitment to preparing students for the workplace. She emphasizes critical thinking, evidence-based decision-making, strategic analysis, collaboration, time management, ethical leadership, and the ability to evaluate complex problems from multiple perspectives. Her teaching encourages students to move beyond theoretical models and consider how strategic decisions affect organizations, stakeholders, communities, and the environments in which businesses operate.

Through her consulting, academic research, teaching, and interdisciplinary sustainability work, Dr. McGunagle brings a distinctive perspective to corporate strategy and international business. Her work bridges business strategy, sustainability, resilience, environmental stewardship, and global perspectives, demonstrating how complex challenges can be examined through both management research and real-world observation. Her continuing scholarship reflects Embry-Riddle’s emphasis on applied learning and prepares future leaders to make informed, responsible, and strategically sound decisions in a rapidly changing global environment.
