Hisaya Tsutsui

Dr. Hisaya (Hisa) Tsutsui is a dedicated and accomplished professor of mathematics. Originally from Osaka, Japan, Dr. Tsutsui has established a distinguished career in mathematics: education and research, marked by nearly two decades of impactful contributions to Embry-Riddle and the international mathematical community. He has been instrumental in international collaborations, including establishing a research and educational exchange agreement with Osaka Metropolitan University. He also founded the Annual Conference for the Exchange of Mathematical Ideas (EMI), fostering collaboration among mathematicians across institutions. A proud native of Osaka, Dr. Tsutsui has maintained strong ties to his home country, regularly delivering invited lectures at Japanese institutions. His work has strengthened global academic partnerships, providing students and faculty with unique cross-cultural research and educational opportunities. Despite a demanding 90-mile daily commute from Phoenix to Prescott, Dr. Tsutsui’s passion for teaching and research remains unwavering. His adventurous academic journey from Osaka, Japan, to the United States exemplifies resilience and a commitment to bridging cultural and academic communities.

Selected Accomplishment and Services (2018-2024

International Universities Educational and Research Partnership Agreement (2019)

I successfully made an agreement for educational and scientific cooperation between ERAU-Prescott and Osaka Prefecture University (OPU), Osaka, Japan. The university is now merged with Osaka City University and now the largest public university in Japan and renamed as Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU). OMU is a major university in Japan with strong engineering departments. The agreement enables us t0

(a) Conduct joint research activities,

(b) Exchange of information in the area of scientific education and research which is of mutual interest to both ERAU and OPU,

(c) Exchange of faculty members for research, lectures, and discussions,

(d) Exchange of graduate and undergraduate students for study and research, and

(e) Access to the various facilities of each institution.

Founded a conference in partnership with other universities (2012-2024)

I founded EMI, the Annual Conference for the Exchange of Mathematical Ideas series in 2012 and has run every year since then except in 2020 and 2021, when we suspended the conference because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the annual conference is to improve communication among mathematicians in different specializations in order to enhance and stimulate their research. Experts in different specializations are invited internationally to give general talks on their research. The conference was established in collaboration with mathematics departments of ERAU - Prescott, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA and the University of Mary Washington University, Fredericksburg, VA. As a result, several joint papers have been published on refereed journals. In recent years, we have received grants from the NSF and publishes our own conference proceedings.

Chair, department of Mathematics (ERAU-Prescott: F2009-S2019)

I was the chair of the department since 2009 and stepped down after Spring 2019 semester. As the department chair, I provided academic leadership in the development and delivery of mathematics courses in support of the University mission and strategic plans. I managed the campus’ mathematics curriculum, advising students for their math classes, served as the math minor coordinator, and provided direct supervision of mathematics faculty members as well as serving as a mentor for tenure track faculty members. I was directly responsible for hiring of 6 tenure track faculty members out of whom 4 have earned their tenure by Spring 2024.

*Course Description (Origamics): The art of origami, or paper folding, is carried out using a square piece of paper to obtain attractive figures of animals, flowers or other familiar figures. It is easy to see that origami has links with geometry. Creases and edges represent lines, intersecting creases and edges make angles, while the intersections themselves represent points. Because of its manipulative and experiential nature, origami could become an effective context for the learning of geometry. In this unique and original class, origami is an object of mathematical exploration. The activities in this class differ from ordinary origami in that no figures of objects result. Rather, they lead the students to study the effects of the folding and seek patterns. The experimental approach that characterizes much of science activity can be recognized throughout the class, as the manipulative nature of origami allows much experimenting, comparing, visualizing, discovering and conjecturing.
