Yusuf Sha'aban

Overview

Dr. Yusuf Abubakar Sha’aban is an associate professor in the Department of Computer, Electrical and Software Engineering. His research focuses on model predictive control, intelligent systems, optimization and computational intelligence, distributed energy systems and uncrewed aerial vehicle applications.

Before joining Embry-Riddle in 2025, Sha’aban held academic and research positions at the University of Hafr Al Batin in Saudi Arabia, Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria, Manchester Metropolitan University and The University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He also served as a visiting faculty member and research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Sha’aban has authored more than 50 journal articles, conference papers and book chapters. His research applies advanced control, optimization, machine learning and intelligent systems to challenges involving power and energy systems, microgrids, renewable energy, electric vehicles, process control and UAV applications. He has also served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on projects involving renewable energy, microgrids, wind energy optimization and smart livestock monitoring.

A Senior Member of IEEE and Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, Sha’aban earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, master’s degree in computer control systems from Imperial College London and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from The University of Manchester. He also holds a postgraduate certificate in teaching and learning in higher education from Manchester Metropolitan University.
