Overview

Dr. Jean-Michel Dhainaut is a professor in the mechanical Engineering Department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach Campus, specializing in structural dynamics and computational mechanics.

Dr. Dhainaut holds a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Old Dominion University. His academic and research background is centered on computational and experimental approaches to structural mechanics and dynamics, with an emphasis on developing efficient methods for analyzing complex engineering systems.

Dr. Dhainaut’s research interests focus primarily on structural dynamics and its applications to both aerospace engineering and medicine. His work combines advanced computational methods with the study of complex structural systems, particularly those involving nonlinear behavior.

A major area of his research involves nonlinear finite element methods for modeling and predicting the response of structures under dynamic loading. He is also interested in reduced-order modeling techniques that make it possible to represent complex structural systems with significantly lower computational cost while retaining the essential characteristics of their dynamic behavior. These approaches can enable more efficient simulation, analysis and design of engineering systems.

His research extends these structural dynamics methods beyond traditional aerospace applications to interdisciplinary problems in medicine. By applying concepts and computational techniques developed in aerospace structural mechanics to biomedical systems, his work explores how engineering modeling and simulation can contribute to the understanding of mechanically complex biological structures.

Dr. Dhainaut is particularly interested in bridging fundamental developments in structural dynamics, nonlinear finite element analysis and reduced-order methods with practical applications. His research provides opportunities for students to work at the intersection of computational mechanics, aerospace structures and interdisciplinary engineering.
