Fusing Satellite and Drone Data with GIS to Create New Analytical Decision Support Tools for Varying Farm Types
  • PI Kevin Adkins

CO-I University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

  • The synergy between moderate resolution satellite imagery and fine resolution drone imagery, LiDAR data, and meteorological data, along with generally available GIS data, must be identified and optimized. These data will be integrated to produce a variety of products that help identify what tools, inputs, and management strategies most effectively contribute to an increase in the productivity and resilience of an important agricultural system to a major weather or climate related disturbance.

GA Airport funding strategies
  • PI Massoud Bazargan

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the current financial environment of publicly owned and operated general aviation airports, and to develop an outlook for future potential.
GAANN
  • CO-I William Engblom

    CO-I J. Gordon Leishman

  • This project is sponsored by the Department of Education Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) fellowship program to support six to 10 Ph.D. students of high ability and financial need in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Generational Violence: Examining the Radicalization Process of Northern Ireland’s Youth
  • CO-I Sean Herman

    CO-I Amy Grubb

  • This project seeks to understand the mechanism by which young people are becoming radicalized members of paramilitary organizations on both the Republican and Loyalist sides of the conflict.
Gold Standards Training and Evaluator Calibration of Pilot School Check Instructors
  • PI Paul Cairns

    CO-I Andrew Dattel

  • A key component of air carrier advanced qualification programs is the calibration and training of instructors and evaluators and assurance of reliable and valid data in support of such programs. A significant amount of research is available concerning the calibration of air carrier evaluators, but no research exists regarding the calibration of pilot school check instructors. This study was designed to determine if pilot school check instructors can be calibrated against a gold standard to perform reliable and accurate evaluations.
Graphics Tools for Meteorology Research and Education
  • PI Mark Sinclair

  • A software package called MADS (Meteorological Analysis and Diagnostic Software) is being developed to provide gridded data (both archived and real-time) and graphical software to produce maps, cross-sections, vertical profiles, time series graphs and statistical (climatological) displays of a large number of basic and derived quantities.

  • Einstein’s theory of General Relativity offers a remarkable description of gravity as curved space and time. Many of the consequences of this theory have been confirmed, and some are used daily, such as the gravitational redshift effect on GPS satellite atomic clocks. In 2015, the first observation of a gravitational wave from two inspiraling black holes occurred using the gravitational wave observatories as part of the worldwide LIGO-VIRGO collaboration. This discovery won the Nobel prize, and the observations of these events have continued, including a multi-messenger event of two colliding neutron stars.

GUMP: General Urban Area Microclimate Predictions Tool
  • PI Kevin Adkins

    CO-I Nickolas Macchiarella

CO-I National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA

  • Hyperlocal weather predictions are often necessary in order to determine whether a particular sUAS route will be safe to fly. The General Urban area Microclimate Predictions tool (GUMP) seeks to provide such predictions through the use of machine learning (ML) models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The computed wind flow field is converted into an intuitive risk map for sUAS operators through the use of appropriate thresholds on wind velocities.

H

Hazard Detection and Avoidance for Lunar Landing
  • PI Troy Henderson

  • This project develops and demonstrates algorithms for detecting and avoiding areas of large rocks and high slopes for a lunar lander
Hidden Dangers on the Flight Deck: A Stakeholder Analysis of the Issues Surrounding Commercial Pilot Mental Health
  • PI Mark Miller

    CO-I Katie Coleman Assad

  • A comprehensive stakeholder analysis of commercial pilot mental health in the US.
High Spectral Resolution Observations of Lunar Exospheric Emissions
  • PI Edwin Mierkiewicz

  • We are employing high-resolution Fabry-Perot spectroscopy of neutral sodium and potassium emission to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the lunar sodium exosphere. Likely atmosphere source mechanisms are thermal desorption, photo-desorption, ion sputtering, and meteoric impact ablation.
