Accident Research and Analysis with the US Helicopter Safety Team, Joint Helicopter Implementation Data Analysis Team
  • PI Scott Burgess

  • This ongoing research effort consists of accident data collection, data processing, data analysis and reporting for the US civil helicopter industry. This work is published through the International Helicopter Safety Team and US Helicopter Safety Team.
Advanced Space Propulsion Systems
  • PI Jonathan Campbell

  • This is a line of research encompassing multiple subsystem approaches to advance in-space propulsion.
Aerodynamic Analysis of Box Wing Configuration for Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)
  • Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis is performed to determine the ideal box wing configuration for small UAS.
Application of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to Support Disaster Response and Recovery Efforts
  • PI Brent Terwilliger

    CO-I David Ison

    CO-I Dennis Vincenzi

  • This continuing research project features detailed examination of legal, procedural, and technological requirements, advancements, and constraints affecting how UAS can best be applied to support disaster response and recovery efforts. Through review of evolving UAS regulatory requirements, best practices, technological advancements, and comparison to conventional means, alternative methods may be identifiable to augment and improve emergency response efforts. Better understanding the complexities of the response environment and available options, will better support future actions.

Aviation Management Education Study (AMES)
  • PI Jason Newcomer

    CO-I James Marion

    CO-I Matthew Earnhardt

  • The Aviation Management Education Study (AMES) is a longitudinal effort consisting of a series of research papers covering various facets of aviation education as it pertains to managers in the field and hiring of industry professionals.

Effects of Visual Interaction on Unmanned Aircraft Operator Situational Awareness in a Dynamic Simulated Environment
  • PI Brent Terwilliger

    CO-I David Ison

    CO-I Dennis Vincenzi

  • This study represents a longitudinal study to further the findings aof an earlier study examining UAS operator situational awareness.
Epidemiology of Low Back Injuries in Aircratft Technicians and Mechanics
  • PI Todd Smith

  • For this study, data will be collected from aircraft maintenance technicians and A&P mechanics from both private and public organizations and the military. A zero-inflated Poisson regression analysis will be completed to examine these factors. Researchers will identify risk and protective factors related to demographic variables, work exposures and organizational variables.
Evaluation of potential exposure risks from 3D printing operations using video and direct reading instrument datalogging
  • CO-I Justin Reed

    CO-I Cheri Marcham

  • Internal College of Aviation funding supported a multi-year study evaluating potential particle and VOC exposure risks associated with 3-D printing operations. The work involved student collaboration and resulted in multiple peer-reviewed conference posters and presentations at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exhibition (AIHce), including a virtual presentation in 2021.
