My Journey of Dedication, Inspiration and Connection at Embry‑Riddle

For more than 30 years, Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University has been my home; 19 years in Arizona and 13+ years in Florida. In both places, I have had the privilege of watching students grow, careers take off, and lifelong friendships form. My journey began as a non-traditional student at the Prescott, Arizona, campus, driven by a deep passion for aviation, a thirst for adventure and the challenge of earning my degree. I have witnessed this university evolve into a globally recognized institution, and I am honored to have played a role in that transformation.

Finding My Flight Path at Embry‑Riddle

Returning to work at Embry‑Riddle was a deeply personal decision. As an alumnus, after working at Northrop Aerospace in Hawthorne, California, and having over a decade of management and business ownership experience, I had numerous opportunities elsewhere. But it was the students, the camaraderie, the mountains, the community and the unique spirit of this place that made it clear — I wanted to come back.

In those early days, Embry‑Riddle was still building its reputation beyond Florida and the Worldwide campuses. I took great pride in helping our graduates establish themselves in the industry. That same pride continues to drive me today as I support our students, alumni and faculty in achieving their goals.

Milestones That Matter

Some of my proudest moments are not just professional, they are personal. One of the greatest highlights of my life was handing my daughter, Chelsea, her diploma on stage at Prescott’s commencement. Watching her build a successful career in social media marketing continues to remind me why I do what I do: helping students and alumni find their own paths and soar.

Another highlight was unexpectedly meeting my wife, Dr. Sally Blomstrom, on a blind date arranged by her department chair when we both worked at Prescott. This university is not just about careers; it is about connections that last a lifetime.

I am honored to have received a Global Service Award and to have been surprised at my own event to be inducted into the Chancellor’s Alumni Hall of Fame, both unexpected and humbling moments. But more than the accolades, these honors represent the relationships I have built and the impact I have been fortunate to have.

Watching Embry‑Riddle Grow

One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been witnessing Embry‑Riddle’s growing reputation. Our alumni are now leading in aviation, aerospace, business and engineering, and our university’s name has soared along with them. Yet, through all the changes, one thing remains the same: our mission. We exist to help students build meaningful careers in fields they are passionate about, and I am proud to be part of that mission every day.

Lessons I’ve Learned Along the Way

My philosophy is simple: treat people well, seize opportunities and stay connected to what truly matters. I have taken pride in mentoring students, supporting alumni and hiring and developing future leaders who have gone on to achieve incredible success.

Whether serving as an honorary commander of Air Force ROTC Detachment 157 or as an assistant coach for the Embry‑Riddle Ice Hockey Team, my goal has always been to help students make the most of their time here and prepare for what comes next.

My Advice for the Next Generation

If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be this: Pursue your graduate degree and credentials early, explore every opportunity, say ‘yes’ to new challenges and never stop learning.

My career, spanning over ten different titles, has been shaped by long hours, continuous education and a willingness to adapt. Success is not about luck; it is about preparation, perseverance and passion.

Beyond the Office: The Other Side of Me

While many people on campus know me for my work at Embry‑Riddle, my life has always been rooted in adventure. I love ice hockey, climbing and hiking, but what many do not know is that I was a member and Training Coordinator for the Sheriff’s Backcountry Search & Rescue Unit, as well as a member of Arizona’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) Short Haul and Helicopter Response Team.

I have flown under helicopters, rappelled into rugged terrain, climbed through the night and operated in extreme conditions on rescue and recovery missions. These experiences have profoundly shaped my approach to physical preparedness, discipline, training, leadership, teamwork and service.

My faith is also a driving force in my life, shaping my values and my commitment to helping others.

Looking to the Future

The road ahead is not without challenges. Rising education costs, the reputation of higher education and the need for student financial support are real issues. I look forward to continuing to support our students, faculty, alumni and the university’s mission, ensuring that Embry‑Riddle remains a place of excellence and opportunity for generations to come.

As I reflect on my decades here, one thing is clear — this journey has been more than just a career. It has been about mentorship, lifelong friendships, and an unwavering belief in following and staying committed to your dreams. The impact of Embry‑Riddle reaches far beyond the campus, and I am grateful to be part of a legacy and hope that my efforts will continue to inspire and uplift for years to come.
