Longtime NGPA Student Member Embodies Commitment and Progress

Standing the Test of Time

Dustyn Shelby (’26) is an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University alumnus and member of the National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA). Dustyn initially joined NGPA in 2016, deepening his involvement through NGPA’s Embry-Riddle Prescott student chapter.

Dustyn also sought community and professional growth through organizations, including the Airline Pilots Association Aviation Collegiate Education Club, Black Student Union and Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals.

“I tried to get involved with organizations that would help me grow as a student and as a pilot,” he said. “I also wanted to be a part of communities that pushed me to learn from people with different experiences and career goals within the industry.”

As a SkyWest Airlines cadet with an Aeronautical Science degree under his belt, Dustyn is preparing for a prosperous career.

Why Embry-Riddle Prescott Stood Out

When he was researching universities, Embry-Riddle's reputation in the aviation industry immediately attracted Dustyn.

“It stood out as a place where I could gain both the technical knowledge and professional experience needed to build a successful career in the industry,” he said.

The tight-knit student community at the Prescott Campus was an added bonus.

“Being surrounded by people who share the same passion for aviation created a very motivating and collaborative atmosphere,” Dustyn said. “The Prescott Campus provides an environment where students are encouraged to grow both academically and professionally.”

NGPA: An Organization Worth Joining

When he first discovered NGPA, Dustyn noticed how active the organization was in its support of LGBTQ+ aviators.

While a lot can change over ten years, Dustyn observed that NGPA has only changed for the better. He noted that the organization’s visibility, inclusivity, resources and conversations about representation have made it easy to stay involved and engaged.

“It has expanded its outreach to students, professional pilots and aspiring aviators,” he said. “It’s been exciting to watch it evolve into a strong professional network that connects people across every stage of aviation.”

Being a member of NGPA’s Embry-Riddle Prescott chapter has strengthened Dustyn’s appreciation for his student experience as well.

“It’s given me a broader aviation network outside of campus, which has helped me see more clearly how what I’m learning connects to the industry,” he said. “Through events, mentorship and conversations with other pilots, I’ve gained perspective that’s complemented my flight training and [coursework].”

Benefits and Resources for NGPA Student Members

As Dustyn has transitioned into his early career as an instructor, he has relied on the NGPA’s resources and wisdom from the aviation connections that the organization has facilitated.

“Some of the most useful resources I’ve found through NGPA have been networking opportunities, mentorship connections and career development programs,” he said. “I’ve also appreciated the organization’s events and scholarship programs, which help create opportunities for students and aspiring aviators.”

Dustyn has gone to the annual Winter Warm-Up and NGPA Industry Expo events in Palm Springs, California, on multiple occasions since becoming a member. The Industry Expo is a particular favorite of his to attend.

“I really enjoy how approachable and welcoming the environment is, especially for students and young professionals trying to make connections in aviation,” he said.

NGPA also offered Dustyn endless avenues to develop consequential connections and friendships.

“Over the years, I’ve built meaningful friendships and professional connections with people who genuinely want to support and encourage one another’s success,” he said. “For me, the biggest value has been in being able to ask questions, learn from people ahead of me and see real examples of how others navigate similar challenges.”

Lessons Learned and Taught at Embry-Riddle

After working hard to build his flight expertise, Dustyn is determined to provide his students with both a strong aviation foundation and a strong sense of confidence.

“I want to help them build confidence, stay safe and enjoy the learning process as they progress toward their certificates and ratings,” he said. “I spent a lot of time overthinking mistakes and holding myself to unrealistic standards. In reality, every pilot goes through the same learning curve ... the truth is that improvement comes with time, repetition and patience — not constant self-criticism.”

In line with these principles, Dustyn wants to become a more skilled and experienced instructor and aviator.

“Long term, my aspiration is to move into the airline industry, ideally with a major carrier, while continuing to carry forward the same mindset of professionalism, mentorship and giving back to the aviation community.”
