For twin sisters Cameron and Madison Rucinski ('27), attending the same college wasn't just an easy decision — it was something they always knew was a part of their plan.
"My twin sister and I have always done everything together, whether it was the sports we played, the classes we took or even deciding what to do on the weekends," Cameron shared. "We always knew we wanted to attend the same university and live together in the dorms. Over the years, we developed many of the same interests and both discovered a passion for aviation."
After deciding that their futures lie in aviation, earning bachelor's degrees in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach, Florida, campus felt like the natural choice.
"We attended campus tours and Preview Days together, completed our flight training side by side in Wisconsin and earned our Private Pilot Licenses before attending," Madison said. "What ultimately stood out most to me was the atmosphere of the campus and being surrounded by motivated students who also are passionate about their future careers."
Pairing Aviation with Meteorology
Fascinated by how weather greatly impacts flying and the aviation industry, Cameron and Madison decided to add a minor in Meteorology to their degrees.
"My interest in Meteorology began after I took my first weather course at Embry-Riddle. I realized just how important a role weather plays in aviation, and I quickly became interested in learning more about it. I wanted to not only better my understanding of weather hazards, but to become a safer and more competent pilot," Madison said.
Through WX 301: Aviation Weather, taught by Dr. Rob Eicher, associate professor of Applied Aviation Sciences, the twins gained a deeper understanding of weather's impact on aviation and how pilots can be safer and more informed.
"One of the highlights was going onto the rooftop of the College of Aviation to collect weather data and create our own meteorological aerodrome reports (METARs) using an anemometer," Cameron said. "As a commercial pilot who constantly reads METARs, it was an incredible opportunity to collect that data firsthand."
Undergraduate Research & Cirrus Aircraft
At Embry-Riddle's annual undergraduate research symposium, Cameron and Madison presented their project titled “Cirrus Aircraft: Promoting Aviation Safety, Technology and Innovation,” focused on aviation safety and specific technologies Cirrus has integrated into its safety systems.
"Our goal was to examine how pilots, students and aviation enthusiasts perceive features such as the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) and the Safe Return Emergency Autoland — looking into whether these innovations influence trust, satisfaction and brand loyalty," Cameron explained.
Supported by mentor Reem Kassira, who is an adjunct faculty member of Management, Marketing and Operations, the twins conducted a survey to analyze how these types of safety systems influenced confidence in an aircraft, finding that many aviation professionals and enthusiasts "viewed Cirrus as a leader in safety and technological innovation."
"Looking ahead, we believe our research highlights the importance of continued investment in safety technology, advanced avionics and human-centered design to improve safety within general aviation," Madison said.
The twins also presented their research at the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines conference earlier this year in Orlando, Florida. They were supported by Embry-Riddle's Office of Undergraduate Research, which helped cover travel costs and other associated expenses.
"Being able to share the hours of hard work that went into this project broadened my perspective on research and collaboration," Cameron shared. "Between working alongside my teammates and receiving support from the pilots, students and aviation enthusiasts who completed our survey, I learned the importance of collaboration, communication, discipline and collecting meaningful data to reach well-supported and credible conclusions."
Growing Stronger Together
As they have worked hard to earn their degrees and follow their dreams at Embry-Riddle, Cameron and Madison are extremely grateful to have each other by their side.
"My favorite part about having my twin on campus with me has been having someone who understands the challenges of balancing both university and flight training," Madison said. "Throughout our time at Embry-Riddle, we both have taken the same classes with the same professors, allowing us to study and support one another academically, which has made the experience much more manageable and enjoyable."
The twins also credit an attitude of campus engagement and active learning to their success.
"My best advice to current and future students is to enjoy your time here, take advantage of every opportunity you're given and take what you learn in the classroom and apply it to real-life situations," Cameron shared. "The experiences and connections you make during your time at Embry-Riddle can have a long-lasting impact on both your education and future career."
After graduation, Cameron and Madison plan to return to the Wisconsin flight school where they earned their Part 61 ratings and work as certified flight instructors while pursuing their shared dream of eventually becoming international airline pilots. Overall, the twins hope to give back to the aviation community and help "inspire the next generation of aviators."
"When I came to Embry-Riddle, I knew I wanted to accomplish more than just earning a degree. I wanted to gain experiences that would allow me to grow not just as a person, but to mentor and inspire other aspiring pilots," Madison said. "Surrounded by so many motivated students and faculty has made me more driven than ever, and I know it's these experiences that will continue to help me achieve my goals in the future."
