A Fascination with National and Global Security
Anthony Rizza (’27) grew up observing international affairs and engaging with national security and intelligence news stories, becoming increasingly interested in a career that merged global security with problem solving in complex environments.
“I have always been fascinated by how governments, military organizations and intelligence agencies make decisions in complex and uncertain environments,” he said.
While researching related programs, Anthony discovered the College of Business, Security and Intelligence (CBSI) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott Campus. He determined that, among the unique degree offerings, the B.S. in Global Security and Intelligence Studies (GSIS) was the package deal for his professional pursuits.
“I discovered that it was the only program of its kind in the nation, combining intelligence studies, national security, cybersecurity and global affairs into a single degree,” he said. “The Intelligence track stood out to me because it focuses on critical-thinking, research and analytical skills that can be applied to real-world security challenges.”
Experiencing Eagle Eye Intelligence to the Fullest
Anthony jumped right in when he arrived on campus, joining GSIS’ Eagle Eye Intelligence (EE). EE is a student-led organization that publishes weekly intelligence analyses on geopolitical issues during the academic year. Anthony joined EE to immerse himself in the practice of crafting intelligence analyses beyond the classroom.
"At first, I sought help from more experienced members to improve my writing and analytical skills,” he elaborated. “The organization provided an environment where I could learn, receive feedback and develop as both a writer and an analyst.”
As he grew confident in his analysis skills, he transitioned into an associate editor role to develop leadership skills.
“I took on greater responsibility for reviewing articles, helping other writers improve their work and contributing to the editorial process,” Anthony said. “That experience gave me valuable leadership and mentoring opportunities while helping me better understand what it takes to produce high-quality analytical content.”
Anthony’s passion and dedication showed, and he quickly climbed the ladder to the executive editor role.
"I help oversee the publication process, mentor writers and editors, maintain editorial standards and ensure that our work reflects the professionalism and analytical rigor that EE strives to achieve,” he said.
The organization functions as an extension of the classroom for Anthony, and he has become a stronger student and contributor as a result.
“These experiences have improved my writing, critical-thinking and time management skills, while also making classroom discussions more meaningful because I am constantly engaging with real-world issues,” he said.
Curating the Perfect Blend of Extracurriculars
Anthony has joined several clubs and organizations to cultivate his hobbies and interests and to get to know people from all corners of campus. Currently, he is a cybersecurity and intelligence representative for the Global Security and Intelligence Student Organization (GSISO) and an advanced skills director for the Climbing Club.
He has also participated in the Cyber Defense Club, Pre-Law Club and Student Advisory Board to grow his skill set and explore all that Embry-Riddle Prescott’s clubs and organizations have to offer.
“My favorite part about attending Embry-Riddle is the combination of exceptional academic opportunities and a community of highly motivated students and faculty,” he shared. “I chose these organizations because they reflect different aspects of my interests and provide opportunities to develop leadership skills while connecting with students who share similar passions.”
Whether someone is pursuing aviation, engineering, cybersecurity, intelligence or national security, there is a strong culture of professionalism and excellence across campus. It creates opportunities for collaboration and allows me to be part of a community where people are genuinely excited about their future careers and making an impact.
Capitalizing on the GSIS Program for Career
Anthony’s favorite part of the GSIS program is how it rapidly integrates current, real-world events.
“Every day there are new developments in international relations, cybersecurity, intelligence and global security, and many of those topics become part of what we study,” he said. “The interdisciplinary nature of the program keeps it engaging because it draws from history, politics, technology, intelligence and security studies to help explain the challenges facing today's world.”
In addition to his engagements and accomplishments at Embry-Riddle, Anthony has dedicated years to developing practical, problem-solving skills as an amateur radio operator, Eagle Scout, mountaineer and paragliding pilot. These experiences shaped Anthony’s character, aligning his habits and skills with the mindset and approach required to excel in global security and intelligence fields. Joining the GSIS program and its associated organizations tied it all together for him.
“I am passionate about national security and intelligence, and I am grateful to be part of a program that allows me to explore those interests while developing practical skills for the future,” Anthony said. “Through my academic studies and campus involvement, I have been able to challenge myself, contribute to meaningful projects and prepare for a career dedicated to addressing complex security challenges.”
