Boeing Scholar Finds Her Calling in Human Factors

A chance conversation at her brother’s graduation led Katherina Steiner (’28) to a path toward aviation, psychology and a prestigious national scholarship. Now a Boeing Scholar at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach Campus, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Human Factors Psychology with a minor in Aerospace Life Sciences.

A Program That Brought Two Passions Together

Steiner, a graduate of Coral Reef Senior High School in Pinecrest, Florida, says her interest in the field began almost by chance.

“At my brother’s graduation, his fiancé mentioned Embry‑Riddle’s Human Factors program to me and suggested I look into it,” Steiner said. “Since I hadn’t decided on a career path, I started researching, and it immediately stood out.”

What she found was a discipline that perfectly merged her interests in engineering with her fascination for how people interact with complex systems.

“I think the way people interact with systems is just as important as the systems themselves,” she said.

Once she learned that Embry‑Riddle was a national leader in the field, she applied — confident she had found the right fit.

A Scholarship That Opened Doors

Being selected as a Boeing Scholar has been transformative, both financially and professionally for Steiner.

“The scholarship has allowed me to attend this school comfortably,” she said. “It’s a massive aid and gives me the freedom to fully explore my major at such a prestigious university.”

The Boeing Scholars program has also helped Steiner refine her academic goals. Exposure to aviation and aerospace applications in the field inspired her to pursue a minor in Aerospace Life Sciences.

“It’s encouraged me to learn more about how human factors plays a role in aviation and space,” she said.

Beyond financial support, the program has introduced her to a network of mentors, peers and industry leaders. Through Boeing Scholars events, Steiner has connected with fellow high-achieving students and Boeing professionals, gaining insight into real-world applications of her studies.

One opportunity stands out above the rest.

“The most meaningful experience was speaking at the Boeing Summit in September,” Steiner said. “I was able to share my story and connect more deeply with both Embry‑Riddle and Boeing staff. It was incredibly motivating.”

Finding Community at Daytona Beach

Living and studying on the Daytona Beach Campus has given Steiner a strong sense of belonging.

“I’m able to stay close to my friends and focus on learning without worrying about commuting or off-campus housing,” she said.

Having a brother already enrolled at Embry‑Riddle also helped her quickly build a support network.

She credits the university’s close-knit community, including professors, advisors, peers and graduate mentors with helping her thrive. “I’ve met M.S. students and teaching assistants who have become incredible mentors,” she said. “I’ve also formed study groups and friendships that make campus life really special.”

Overcoming Perfectionism, Embracing Growth

Like many high-achieving students, Steiner faced challenges early on, particularly with perfectionism.

“I was so afraid of making mistakes that I was scared to start,” she said. “I thought it was easier to fail because I didn’t try than to fail because I wasn’t good enough.”

With guidance from her advisor and professors, Steiner learned to reframe that mindset.

“They helped me see through it quickly,” she said. “Now I have healthier ways to approach challenges.”

What keeps her motivated during tough moments is a deep sense of belonging and the unwavering support of her family.

“I know I belong here,” she said. “My family has sacrificed so much for me. If they can do that for me, I can do this for myself.”

Advice for Future Boeing Scholars

Steiner encourages aspiring students to fully embrace the opportunities available to them.

“Take advantage of every resource you’re given,” she said. “Make connections. Every Boeing member I’ve met has been kind, supportive and full of valuable advice.”

As she looks ahead, Steiner says she’s most proud of representing Embry‑Riddle and her fellow students at the Boeing Summit and grateful to those who believed in her.

“I’m especially thankful to the Center for Career and Professional Development and Allison Austin in particular, for trusting me with that opportunity,” she said. “It’s something I’ll carry with me for a long time.”
